So. . . . what are Aspie get-togethers like? Because

I get along extremely well with Aspies who are really obsessive about special interests, but for Aspies whose main symptom is social problems, I tend to not click with them. My social deficits are mild and hidden well, and I don't deal well with Aspies who are quiet.

One can easily be really obsessive as well as quiet. I am.

Some time ago I was pm’ed by someone on an Aspie forum who asked if we could chat. I eagerly accepted. The first day we chatted for 3 hours. We seemed to click, liking a lot of the same things. The 2nd day it turned out like all real life conversations do for me. I can ask something or mention something but I can’t keep up a conversation at all. When I don’t have anything to ask or say, I have no idea what to say at all and will keep quiet. The first minutes we had something to say but after that I had nothing to say or ask and I guess neither did she, as she was quiet as well. It went on for about 2 hours and the only communication was the occasional ”Are you still there?” We never chatted again…

I guess an Aspie gathering would be very much the same. Plus those of us who keep quiet would be thoroughly exasperated by Aspie talkers, and vice versa.

If you haven't met a lot of Aspies in person before, an Aspie get-together would open your mind about Asperger's and how diverse it is. That is, how diverse Aspies are in terms of personality.

Expect as many disagreements and personality clashes as in any other type of meet-up, but expect an experience that's more positive than negative overall.

I found a cool stim toy today at Trade Aid. It wasnt coloured... it was a wooden toy with silver balls where you have to shake the ball into certain places, but the ball rolls away again... etc.

I can imagine they are a lot like my family get-togethers. Lots of nervous shuffling. Awkward attempts at chit-chat. Until . . . someone mentions an interest aaaand BOOOM! BIG INTENSE DISCUSSION ENSUES. We have the time of our lives.

I know a bunch of people who I'm pretty sure are on the spectrum, and this is exactly what it's like when we all hang out.

Never been to a support group or anything like that, though.

I organize one local AS meetup, and participate in another, and though there are some challenges involved both can be a lot of fun. What I found out was that when I sat everyone down at a table and tried to hold a unified discussion, things often bogged down or got awkward, and our group moderator often had to cut off people who where "monologuing". When we went to a more open, mixer style format with small groups having independent conversations, that worked much better with much more personal interaction and much better conversational flow. We also serve beer at our meetings, and I think that helps...

I have been to Autreat a couple times and also we had some groups at MAAP (a parent run group about their kids with hfa/AS). They were pretty relaxed and I really did enjoy them. Yes, I love the stim toys. My personal favorite is a penlight with a fiber optic hairs at the end. There is a little colored wheel so that the color changes.
BTW, I found a great website for stim toys! http://www.ozmofun.com/light.htm
There are some things here I haven't seen for a long time. (BTW, I have not ordered from them, so I can't vouch for them.)

I've been looking all over google for stim toys and things, and it's all sex shops. Annoying it is.

I've never been to an Aperger's gathering. I haven't met many other autistic or Asperger's people, the only ones that come to mind are one quiet Aspie boy, one Aspie boy who was a bully, and one girl in a group home that had great difficulty communicating.

Same here. I tried a search mentioning the movie title "Snow Cake" and toys, and only got sexual references. Well, at least I got some cool leads here.

There really is no such thing as "stim toys," they are basically rubber balls or things that spin or magnets you can play with, Happy Meal Toys can be a stim toy. Anything that you can fiddle with I call a "stim toy." Even water toys.

Lots of stim toys at Canadian Tire and the Dollar Store and the San Francisco at parkland mall in Red Deer then...as well as the bookstore at Red Deer College :)

It's Missouri, so I am guessing US.

This is all really interesting to me.
I just decided to look up and see if there are any AS groups in my city.
There is at least one, but I am really reluctant to go to it.
I just haven't the slightest idea about how any of it might go.
It is helpful reading about your experiences.
