When I'm in high-anxiety situations(i.e basically anywhere with loads of people), I tend to do it A LOT. I'm pretty sure I do it under the delusion it makes me look occupied. I'll also tend to have my iPod out and just randomly click at the turned-off screen and look at it, or turn the volume up excessively high giving off the idea I can't hear them, or I'm busy, ergo, can not talk.
I'll also talk while I'm reading, just random sentences/phrases like, 'Wtf? That's BS!'(I tend to read pretty controversial books... LOL).
But yeah, I talk to my self.

I talk to myself. It helps understand what I'm thinking.

I talk to myself all the time, I always have done. I can chat away far more animatedly to myself than I can to other people. For me this is normal and just part of who I am, I can't imagine not talking to myself. I don't personally see anything wrong with this, but I know that to other people it seems weird, so I try not to talk aloud to myself when other people are around. Sometimes though I don't hear them coming or I just don't realise they are there. They (family members who are used to my weirdness anyway) don't say anything, but i feel embarrassed and have a good idea what they are thinking.

do turrets outbursts count ?

i teach in public school (that's another story in itself) so during the 10 weeks off for the summer i am practically living in isolation the entire time except for the occasional trip to the store for food and things. yeah, if i didn't talk to myself then no one else would.

however, i have also noticed i tend to just blurt out sounds or words without any preceding cognition - turrets syndrome seems to be setting in - that or senility.

wtf

Yes, all of the time. Never in front of people.

I started when I was 7 or 8 years old or so. I can't remember.

i have no idea what you are trying to say or get at.

teaching high school has nothing to do with "ivory towers". such would be more germane to a university research professor or those high powered think tanks.

Well like someone above mentioned thinking is kinda like talking to yourself. And i do that always. I only talk to myself out loud when cursing or when I'm around other people and I start saying something I'm thinking but then I realize it's useless to say so I finish the sentence under my breath. It's like if I get confused between what I wanted to say and what I was simply thinking. (doesn't happen too often mostly when I'm tired)

Yes, and it's often the most intelligent conversation I have all day

It was a pun type of thing - "turret", like architectural tower-type feature on an old building or house http://images.oldhouseweb.com/stories/b ... turret.jpg

spelling of other is Tourette syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourette_syndrome

I talk to myself all the time. I think it helps me out, especially if I've been alone all day.

I often do, especially as I am driving the car or walking a alone in the forest.
