Right up there with hon and sweetheart is when someone I don't know uses my name in the conversation. I work in sales (my own personal hell) and I can't stand it when someone walks upan looks at my nametag and then refers to me by name throughout the conversation as if we were old friends.

For me its kinda weird when strangers call me that because where Im from we dont use those types of terms. Im not used to it the few times it happens but I just assume its just a way a person talks.

I particularly dislike being called, "Sir." I feel that the term is self-belittling on the part of the speaker. While I realize that 'sir' is a formal title of sorts, I feel very awkward when someone degrades himself by, in a sense, placing himself below me.

Is that why? Because I was politely told off by a waitress when I tried to politely get her attention by addressing her as "ma'am."

And btw, at my grocery store, we are required to address each and every customer as "sir" or "ma'am."
