As much as I absolutely hate listening to children screaming, I do believe that, in a lot of cases, there is nothing that the parent(s) can necessarily do about it. When looking at it from certain angles, it is actually a 'catch 22' situation for the parents. By this, I mean that the reason why these children are screaming their heads off is because, 9 times out of 10, the children do not want to be trudged around the shops, pharmacies etc, but they are necessary outings that parents have to make in order to get food, medicines etc that are required. They have to take their children out with them, presumably because they haven't found anyone else that can take them off their hands for a couple of hours, so that's the way it has to be. So yes, while it really makes my blood boil to hear a screaming child/children in a shop, on the bus etc, unless the parents are just being complete eejits, I don't tend to complain as I believe these parents need to be cut some slack as it's obvious the child doesn't want to be there for whatever reason and the parent(s) can't do anything about that. If I think it's bad, how must the parent(s) feel? At least when I leave the store or get off the bus, that's it for me, not so for the parents, who may possibly have known that this was the way their day was going to turn out....

I know that when young children scream they do it because they usually don't know any other way of saying "I'm tired", "I'm hungry", or "I want to go home". Still, I never have liked screaming in general - this became worse after a girl at school thought it would be funny to scream into my ear.

ANY baby or little-kid sounds, not just crying and screaming, are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I know the little ones can't help it, but I can't help my reaction to it either. I just do the best I can to avoid situations where I am around babies or small children. Noise-cancelling headphones help, too.

I can't even stand TV or radio commercials with baby noises in them--sends me frantically scrambling for the mute or off button.

I have children, and I can't stand this sound. I believe I'm more strict than most because of this fact. Also, I really hate when parents allow their children to scream in a store. My children are on the spectrum from Aspergers to severe (rett syndrome), and if they're out with me, they can't handle the noise either. If either of my children has a meltdown (and my daughter can't help it), I leave the store IMMEDIATELY, even if I have a cart full of items. It's also why I never shop alone with children. One person will take the kids outside, and the other will pay for what we picked out.

Whenever I'm at the register, I dread the customers with the shrieking kids. That is because I have to stay there until they have been completely checked out, and all their crap is paid for. While I am scanning their items, the kid is shrieking at the top of its lungs, and I am trying my hardest not to hurtle their junk past the scan laser at lightning speeds as it might fly off the table. With every shriek, my tolerance grows shorter, until I am rocking on my heels and trying not scream myself and start crying.

Fortunately the shriekers are rare, but when they do happen, it can leave me upset for several hours thereafter. I can stand screaming, but the shriekers are pure agony. :wall:

One thing I have zero tolerance for is that high pitched shriek that so many little girls do. It's not a "I need my nap and a diaper change" shriek. It's a "hey everybody, listen to this ear-piercing sound I can make over and over again, because I'm the girliest little girl in the whole world, and Pepto-Bismal pink is my favorite color!! !" kind of shriek. I have a friend with a little girl who does that. She did it at a birthday party, every time a certain thing happened in a game. Her mother encouraged it, because it was a sign of happiness and fun. But it really hurt my ears. I was never a screamer or shrieker; I always found that a bit loathsome when classmates did that.

When I have a kid, that is the first thing I will teach my kid not to do as soon as is humanly possible. I'd be "Honey, please don't squeal like that, that hurts Mommy's ears."
