I am often startled startled back to the reality that I am here and in my body and such. Over the past few years I have taken to doing things like wearing a ridiculous amount of bracelets to help try to keep me aware of where I am in my body. I need to remind myself of this often enough, it seems, as I have always done things like tap myself or bump into things as a way to gauge where I am in myself. I tend to feel disconnected from my body and like I float in my head or two inches back in my mind. One would think the reality jolts would not still stun me for a moment by now, but they still do. It takes me a few seconds to catch up and get with the world outside of my head when I get sucked up in it.

On a somewhat related note... I am more surprised when I find myself looking at someone, like my husband, and get the sudden realization that he is real. I have known him for about ten years now and still there are days when I look at him and it is like I am seeing him for the first time. My head knows that I know him but the reality that he is real and he is him and a person and such... it messes with my head.

Thanks everyone for your great input.......

Good to see everyones experience with similar feelings.

I have taken bits of responses and it has helped me phrase it better in my own mind.

Cheers, everyone.

As I spend most social events in silence and as an observer, I'm very familiar with this feeling. I usually observe people as they talk to eachother, to the point of being able to predict the gist of their replies, and when someone suddenly includes me in the conversation by asking a question I'm hit with the realisation that they know I'm here.

It's like watching television and all of a sudden the characters on screen stop what they're doing, turn to you and reveal that they're aware of you.

Good Story: I was staring at the wall downtown (with parents), waiting for my brother to exit the chip shop with a tonne of chips. I faintly hear "Daniel... Daniel..." in the background, but pay no attention to it... I get tapped on the back by my mother... "Huh? Oh, Hi Ricky." I say, as I realise that a schoolfriend was a mere metre away and he was the one calling my name. I instantly wonder - Why did I not notice him earlier?

Okay, let me try and explain......it has taken me six months to even realise what "this" was.......

I am so much in my head most of the time, that when I am required to interact, I momentarily get frightened, like I am in an elevator that drops suddenly.

It is like, "Oh, here I am.......I exist".

It passes quite quickly, but it is at these times that I realise how far from "humanity" I go...... :?:

Cofused? Yep, me too.

Yes, I do this too.

I did it especially as a child, when I would also have experiences similar to looking down from a cloud, and wondering why I was here on earth, not an angel.

Strange, but true. :D

Actually, I think this is the sensation I feel when I risk direct eye contact with someone I don't know well. The gut level realization that they see me! It's a visceral thing as if you're prey that's been spotted by predator.
