I would have a kid if I could afford to have one. Raising a child in poverty in my opinion is child abuse. There is no way I could give my kids the same lifestyle my parents gave me. Father was a jerk who kicked my ass for things that were beyond my control but al least he provided a good life for my brothers and me. We had all the toys we wanted, dirt bikes, four wheelers, and even firearms so we could go hunting with him. We all had small game licenses and after 16 big game licenses for deer hunting, I may not be able to excell in the classroom but I hunted the hell out rabbits, squirrels, and turkey its good to know I can survive if I have too.

I have never been able to find a job that paid over 10.00 /hr. Thats not enough to take care of myself let alone a wife and child.

Geniune question. I am someone who is fairly mild on the autistic spectrum. Should I reproduce? Would I be morally obliged to do so or not? Really I am just curious for your answers, fundementally I am getting at the question as to whether or not someone being born with AS is better/worse/indifferent to an NT. I appreciate all your thoughts.

I can't see why you wouldn't if you wanted to. I have a saying that I use with my family "The autism fairy has taken a few things, but she's left much more than she's taken."

PLEASE reproduce. I don't understand the whole sense that there is something WRONG with us. I think we enhance the world around us. Neurodiversity is only one facet of biodiversity. I married an NT and have a 2yo son and a 1yo daughter (don't ask! lol). So far there is very little sign of social impairment beyond maybe slightly delayed speech in the boy and a little shyness in new social situations--not unusual in any child of that age. I understand that ASD doesn't really show up quite this early, but so far we don't see any warning signs. About as close to a warning sign as I can see is my son prefers to play by himself, but he absolutely ADORES his sister and we rarely see them separated outside daycare.

My advice? DO IT!! !

Why not? I personly am not going to because I detest children...even my own neices and nepphews. What makes anyone think I would want them of my own?
