I've heard the phrase "stimming" a lot during my time here, could somebody explain it to me?

Yup, when I'm in my room flapping it's much better if I have music going, and it's best when it's a brand new song.

Flapping your hands, pacing, rocking, etc.

Ahh, thanks :).

I've never flapped or rocked but I pace a lot when thinking or listening to music.

yeh definitely sometimes but not often for prolonged periods of time. i can often control how multiple instruments sound allowing quite complex music. it is like i am composing it but without conscious control over the precise notes. i think certain feelings manifest the feeling of the music. It could all be an illusion though. it is very fickle and i cannot control it but it usually only happens when i am in bed so i think it is somewhat different to your kid.

music is widely seen as a very important tool for autistics as it is another form of expression. for me personally it is incredibly therapeutic. if i am feeling sad i will play it out on the guitar and realise, "hey i just made my thoughts into music".

I compose perfect remixes to well known songs in my head, so I hope that with the technical knowledge, I can make them real and make a career out of it.

Hey everyone, I need your comments, knowledge, and insights.

My background: I'm an ABA therapist for a 7-year-old boy with high functioning autism. He is verbal. I am also a part-time shadow/aide for him at school, and one of the many parts of my job is redirecting stims. He mostly hand-flaps, makes this grunting/moaning noise, and paces.

The other day he was really having a hard time concentrating on anything because he was stimming so much (there was a lot of sensory noise at the time, and it was kind of disorganized chaos in the classroom), and I asked him why he was stimming so much. He said "Because there's music in my brain!" He has repeated this over a few days when different people ask him the same question, so I don't think it's just because he had a song stuck in his head at the time. I asked him what kind of music, like fast music or slow music, and he said "All of them! Fast music and slow music and just-right music."

This really intrigues me since I am really into music. He doesn't know enough about music yet to identify genres (classical, rock, country, etc) or instruments, so I can't ask him about that. But I was curious if any of you had ever experienced hearing music in your mind while you stim, or anything like that? If so, what kind of music?

I know of someone here who hears music their head a lot. I will PM them and get them to post here.

Thanks! That would be most helpful.

Out of curiosity, what other kinds of things has everyone seen/done as stimming behaviors?
What's the most interesting one you've ever seen? When you talk about "conductor arms" what exactly do you mean? The boy I work with sometimes puts one arm straight out at the level of his eyes then shakes/waves it around furiously as if he were conducting... is this what you're talking about?

When ever I find my self at work where I'm close to a meltdown at any point I always play the song April Rain by the band Delain. In fact I play there whole CD.

It really helps me out and clams me back down.

Those are just two of there songs. But that whole CD works wonders for me. When I was flying to Arizona last year I kept playing that CD over and over again. I never understood why I would play that CD over and over again or why I do it at work. But after learning a lot about aspergers I understand better.

listening to a wurlitzer theatrical pipe organ in a large theatre, makes me feel like i am floating in the air, wafting on the musical currents. it totally enthralls me, makes my body sway to and fro and my feet tap and my head nod like a bobblehead doll.

In case this is helpful to you, I have a constant music inside my mind. Always. It is almost always music fragments. If a song I like a lot comes in, it usually continues to unfold the entire thing, at my own pace. Other times fragments from random times and songs I may not even like occur. It can switch to other sound though like a speech fragment, but this is much rarer and almost always a vocal part of a song.

I'm not officially diagnosed but have noticed strong AS like traits. I have no idea if this sound-stream is related to stimming within the spectrum.

Does anyone else get this?

I first started it when I would listen to my favourite song at the time frequently pretty much every day. When I had my full attention on the music, I would feel the music filling me up and I would go mad. Since I found my love for house music and found lots of songs I really like, I'm doing it all the time. One song in particular, if I'm listening to it properly, I'll throw my head around and flap my hands like crazy and jump around. The ONE time I went out "clubbing", I did not mind being in a crowded place with such noise because I was away in myself with this crazy dancing. I thought this was just what you did but I realised everyone else was just mildly dancing compared to me going totally mental to everything. I just can't control myself and I like fall over.

I once spent an hour doing that kind of hardcore stimming while listening to "Reise, Reise" by Rammstein on repeat. It precipitated a roommate into moving out.

Depends on the kind of music, I listen to a LOT of power metal so I bounce around my room, or I've found I move my legs a lot. If it's softer music I fall into a pleasant malaise.
