YES, and I never have used drugs. I hate it, because I respect and appreciate the police in general. They shine the lights in my eyes, and I can't take that. I get rude and jerk away from the light, and that scares them. The police have asked me if I needed a ride home a couple times because I have the tendenacy to stagger when I walk. I just tell them some of my blood pressure pills ruin my balance they believe it then tell me to be careful then drive away. My blood pressure pills do not, I just do not want them to think I am crazy, on drugs, or drunk so they will not take me away.

I'm sure the way I walk/look lost in thought/avoid eye contact leads some people to think I'm on drugs. When I am actually high(weed), you've got to be an idiot to not notice. My anxiety, problems walking normally, and eye contact issues are magnified 100x when I'm high and in public. I can't regulate the way my voice comes out when I'm high either.

A few people asked me about it (pot) in high school if I did probably because I seemed really odd and spacey.

After high school I actually smoked it on and off infrequently sometimes more than others and drank too. Honestly Id advise anyone on here to NOT do it. It was cool for a little while, but if you have deep deep issues like social anxiety, self-awareness, depression, it makes it 1,000 times worse.

There were times when I was really baked out in public like in a supermarket, and I was so out of it that I felt like I was ret*d...... felt like every person who saw me could see right through me. That guy is ill, is what I was thinking everybody instantly saw in me.

Plus the nightmare that once a few years go by, your not in school anymore and have no social life, hundreds of miles away from family, and your lonely as f**k........the nausea of wondering just how much pot screwed you up.

Of course its not pots fault. Its yours for doing it. You cant blame drugs.

The point its normal people act "normal". We dont even when we are sober. We act closer to NTs on drugs if this thread can add up to any of its experience. When we are on drugs.......its much farther

Weed to me was really more like heroin

that was exactly how I felt when I was high.....thank you for explaining that......

very simple things....like walking, talking create an intense amount of anxiety, because I know people can tell. It feels really scary when I cant regulate my voice, because I know my voice doesnt sound right. I can barely walk. That s**t is not fun. weed isnt for me

Me, never. But Number 1 Son - who does not participate - has had that sort of comment. Just strange enough, I guess

In high school I got accused of being on crack several times by my peers...my answer to that was "no...I come by this naturally"
As for the record...I have never done drugs for recreational use including alcohol...but I have taken medication since I was 5.
I just figured that I have enough problems with my brain that I did not need to add to it by using drugs. When the dare officer came to my school and told horror stories about ppl on drugs ripping their eyes out of the sockets because they halucinated spiders were crawling on their eyes...he made a believer out of me. I figured that I had enough problems without that crap.

But yes I got accused of being on some good s@%t as well as being on crack. ohhh well. I thought I was the only one who had this problem...apperently not.

Well, I am on drugs. :/

But in high school, yeah, one kid used to say I looked stoned. Flat affect at work.

That's why I stopped doing it.

Aspergers + weed = anxiety.

Great fun being paranoid of the carpet at home but people?

Forget it :-)

What do you mean about your voice?

Do you shout at people?

Or say what you are thinking aloud?

I sometimes do that anyway!

I will just externalise a whole load of internal thought processes

People look very concerned

It meets their criteria for MAD I guess

:-)

Cheers

What actually happens when some people get stoned is they slump slightly and crush the lower part of the lungs down (especially if sitting) and shallow breathe and hyperventilate

This completely messes up their blood oxygen and CO2 balance and then all the weird stuff kicks off - paranoia - anxiety etc

When it happens stand tall and straight take long slow breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth filling your lungs from the bottom and expanding them in such a way as to keep your shoulders level

breathe in two three four five nice and slow

and out two three four five six seven eight

do it for at least three minutes five minutes if you are stoned

no panic just gentle long relaxed breaths

I may not have that exactly right I am not a doctor

But I do know if you find yourself yawning or sighing a lot it is a sign things are out of whack and your body is trying to correct it

And of course the above stands regardless of if you are on drugs or not

And remember - a lot of people with AS have paradoxical reactions to all kinds of drugs due to different brain chemistry

I go green, but I rarely leave home if my eyes are still red and I haven't taken a shower to remove the smell. But whether high or not, I've never been accused of being on drugs.

My friend (nuther Aspie), however, gets accused all the time. But unlike me, he does the harder drugs (E, coke, & acid). But it doesn't matter when he is or not.

I guess the difference is that I can keep eye contact.

Do you really think that's attributable to weed though, or is that just the classic social impairment that goes with AS? I've actually managed to make a few friends through a shared interest in getting stoned (amongst other things like music, films etc), and yet I know other aspies who don't use drugs at all, yet are still in the same predicament that you describe.

I personally find that whilst I don't like being stoned in public, when I'm chilling out at home on my own it helps me wind down after work so I can sleep, and actually makes being on my own feel easier to deal with.

I do realise that there are brands of weed available nowadays that have an almost narcotic strength, but I personally avoid those in favour of old-fashioned standard potency stuff. I think it's far less dangerous to use both weed and booze in moderation than it is to drink every day.

Yes, I have had people accuse me of being on drugs. My younger brother once came to visit me at my workplace, to drop something off. One of my co-workers later told me that my brother (who is also on the spectrum) looked "high." I said that my brother was artistic and sensitive! That really irritated me. But I can see how we might appear that way to others.

Hahaha, I actually do enjoy weed when I'm at home, and my step-mom smokes it and so does my dad sometimes, so there's really no anxiety there and it has actually brought me and my step-mom from wanting to kill each other to being pretty close. When I'm stoned in public I'm just really uncomfortable, sometimes my body will even start to tremor which is really embarrassing and hard to control. I have to think about every little next move I will make and concentrate on not looking weird doing it. The voice thing I can't really explain. I kind of feel like I'm so far deep into my mind and the anxiety I feel that the words just don't come out right. I'll usually use hyperbole to describe how 'high' I am with my friends so they understand that I won't be capable of doing normal things for a while 8O

I have been accused of having alcohol problems. And NO, I do not even touch alcohol, as the disease with which it is associated is rampant in my family.
