I've been told many times that I'm intelligent or seem intelligent. And I am quite intelligent in my preferred areas.
But I've been told that I'm dosey and "what are you like??" many times which suggests I'm some absent minded air head, as well as being clever.
So I'm a stupid smart person I guess.

Somehow, people are able to see behind my quirks and social flaws and come to the conclusion that I'm quite intelligent. I have a sharp wit, I've learned to think on my feet, come forward as funny and entertaining (once you get to know me) and can make a meaningfull conversation about mostly anything, except I'm not very good/comfortable with smalltalk, being comforting or talk about personal stuff. With strangers, or when talking about something I'm not interested in / comfortable with - I take the listening role and ask questions to seem interested. I don't really talk about my true interests though that's where I truly shine. Even at school I had to hold back - It was not 'appropriate' to excell at anything and if you did - you would be a subject to bullying. I don't have the same urge to throw random facts at people anymore, I've learned to controll it because I've been pretty much surrounded by people who couldn't care less - so I had to dumb myself down. But I don't keep my abilities a big secret - most people know I'm quite the mastermind (screw modesty, I have several iq tests to prove it xP) and the one to go to about theoretical problems.

People who know me IRL think i'm intelligent, internet people think i'm stupid.

I tend to mince words and half of them are sexist.

Depends. While I have taken an actual IQ and scored in the high 120s, and I did very well in school, most children considered me ret*d due to my weirdness. I remember a friend of mine saying that he thought that I was an idiot savant at first, and people have often treated me as if I was an idiot. IQ test results aside, while I don't think I'm a genius, but I don't think I'm average either.

I was always told I was VERY smart in school. I was supposed to go to private school in 6th grade because my teacher in elementary school thought I was gifted. but my family is poor so that never happened. I started going way down hill. grades-wise in middle school. I was being bullied mercilessly and I just kind of gave up on myself. I knew I was different form the other kids anyway and I didn't know why. So, the next year I switched schools and "reprogrammed" myself, I became a totally different person, started hanging out with a lot of different people but neglected school even more. I've been much more socially accepted since then but I just quit making the effort in school. I threw myself all the way into maintaining my facade. The facade drains energy and interferes with some of natural talents as well, so I know I don't seem as intelligent now as I did years ago.

People do still tell me I'm intelligent, though, all the time. LOL, I don't want to sound arrogant but they say that my mind just works differently somehow. To be fair I can come off as seeming very intelligent one day and like a neandrathal the next. I go through burnouts about once a year, you would NOT think I was smart if you talked to me during one of these times.

People are always telling me "Oh you're so smart!" and it gets really annoying. I'd rather want people to think I'm stupid.

This is what I get, and I think the extensive vocabulary has a lot to do with it. I am pretty smart, but I do often feel a lot of people perceive me as being smarter than I really am. I agree that the Aspie tendency to know a LOT about certain subjects often leads others to assume that we know that much about everything else, too.

If only!

This.

People tend to either think that I'm some kind of a genius (for the reasons quoted above) or that I'm ret*d (because of my lack of social skills, my posture and the fact that if I don't concentrate on keeping my mouth closed, it hangs open slightly).
Neither is an accurate view. I'm very intelligent, but by no means a genius, and I'm socially ret*d and my organisational skills are at about a 10-year-old level, and my emotions are more like a child's than an adults, but I'm not globally ret*d.

I think my poor verbal fluency leads people to believe that I'm unintelligent (i.e., YOU went to COLLEGE?), but my verbal IQ is the superior range. Oh, autism.

I've always been called intelligent...never been called otherwise. I have been called gullible, have no common sense, stuff like that, but not unintelligent. I can't answer the 'why people see us this way' question, because I'm sure not all of us are intelligent or that not everyone sees us that way. A lot of times I feel like I need to be smarter, and I think this is because everyone seems to think I'm so smart.

People have often said I'm the smartest person they have ever met. My employer says I have a "unique skillset"
Yet sometimes when problem solving a simple situation I can't think of the obvious.

Everybody who knows me thinks I'm intelligent, because I AM intelligent. :)

I came from a long line of super smart weirdos, eccentric scientists and other sorts of oddballs with high IQ. I actually feel not very bright compared to my dad who's a brilliant scientist, and apparently his father considered him pretty dumb. My grandpa considered anybody who couldn't remember the details of an article after reading it just once to be dumb. But then none of them had a good marriage, as they couldn't find spouses smart enough for them. I'm glad I got dumb enough to find a good spouse.

People for the most part seem to think I'm either a lot smarter or a lot dumber than I actually am. And there's no real rhyme or reason to it, I guess it mostly depends on how one chooses to engage me.

Has anyone else encountered this? Why do you think we come across as intelligent?

Maybe its because we tend to talk about more deep and meaningful stuff than NT's do.

most people do not think of me as smart.
a few people think i am smart in certain ways however.

people who have not spent a lot of time interacting with me think i am an ignorant and arrogant person with a snobbish accent who is very basal and materialistic.

i often compound this perception of me deliberately because i try to think of excruciatingly absurd things to say (which i find amusing), but i do not have an inclination to smile or let on that i am not being serious. i will say extremely stupid things to most people with a serious face (deliberately).

some people wonder why i am not hospitalized because they can not imagine me being able to operate successfully in society with my "style of mind".

at the company i work for as a remote computer programmer , people think i am a person with no real life except to solve puzzles that they are to busy to deal with.
i always solve their data dilemmas, and they perceive me as adequate to deal with their quandary, but they also feel i am not as evolved as they are because while i am at home muddling through minutiae, they are out socializing and bringing in the big bucks through securing deals and crafting the business to be profitable.
all i am to them is a tool in their box that they use to sort out the mind squashing errata and build the electronic scaffolding that they need to satisfy their clinched deals.

even though they understand that what i do is not their "cup of tea", they also think that what they do is far more important than what i do.

so it is like i build the block of units that they secure the tenants to live in.

but to them, a block of units that is untenanted is a money hole and will result in financial despair without their clients (tenants).
to me a block of squalid undeveloped land with 100's of eager tenants eager to move in is a health hazard and they will exodus and never come back.

better to have an uninhabited tenement that can stand unweathered until it it is utilized than to have a crowd of people seduced to a dead end where they all blow their stacks and depart in disgust.

but still, they see me as inferior to them.
most people see me as inferior to them, and i could not give a damn because what they see is confined to their own brains which in turn is confined to their airtight skulls.

Some people think I'm slow, stupid or mentally restarted. I sometimes have problems understanding things most people do. I tend to take things literally, I have a horrible sense of direction(I get things like left, right, back, front ect confused when people are talking maybe due to Dyslexia), I have bad vision so I sometimes(or lots of times) don't notice visual things that most people would notice easily. I had lots of academic problems in school(I'm NOT good at math, spelling, english, I don't understand diagrams, I read slowly & when I'm typing it takes me a long time to type a post). I sometimes have problems explaining things to people verbally. I daydream/zone-out a lot & I sometimes miss out on things(maybe related to ADHD). I also have a warped sense of humor. People also think I'm stoned & I sometimes sound like a pot-head.

Other people think I'm smart because I sometimes come up with good creative ideas, I analyze things & when my friends are having a relationship or other personal problem that they want help sorting out instead of only a sympathetic ear(they want advice as well) I'm the person they come to. I also do wear glasses sometimes(but only for distance things like work, job interviews, or going to the movies; I do not wear em around the house, going shopping, family things ect) & some people have told me I look smart with em.

I think I'm smart in some ways but not smart in other ways; I do NOT have school smarts or street smarts. I feel I come off as unintelligent sometimes because I'm kind of in my own world a lot.
