That all changed after my mother passed away and I was left on my own. First hunger, then depression. I didn't have the mind or patience to go to college so I ended up taking whatever work I could:

Once you've known how sweet life can be for NT's why would you want to stick around and make myself into a servant? Why is life made to be so miserable and unworthy for aspies?

Really sorry to hear that about your mom. How old were you?

I'd imagine in your neighborhood that there are some NTs not doing all that much better. That's why I like Obama care. The economy sure isn't making many great jobs that lets people take care of them-self. People do get sick you know.

Dang this depression of mine. Technically, over the years, I've worked at jobs that allowed me to buy a house and live a normal life, but chronic depression kept me down and led to various addictions. There's no one to blame but me and I'd say I had many lost years.

Poverty? I could write a book. I've been homeless on the street, wandering around in a drugged-out haze. And this was in several cities and states, too. I was chasing that stupid dream of trying to be a professional musician but, in the end, was an absolute waste of time. I even lost a good relationship because of this stupid dream.

I have a fear of becoming poor and homeless. I live on a disability pension and though I'm well off and manage to save a lot of money I have an impulsive spending problem, that meds once fixed and then made worse. I grew up pretty poor with a rich father in the city who used that money to stay in our lives. But he's gone now and can't really bail any of us out, and we wouldn't want that. Decided to buy a house before he died and left my mum in +$100,000 worth of debt.

It's a silly little fear I have but if I don't have a certain amount in my bank account I start to panic.

My other fear is starving to death, yet I'm still trying to keep my weight low.

Putting things into perspective.

So you live in the modern age and your worry about being poor. you have no idea how good you really have it. well let me put thing into perspective.

Did you know that the average modern day low income/lower class person lives a more luxurious lifestyle then the emperors of Rome did and even most monarchs of the 18th century and earlier. Even wealthy people of those times never had it as good as we do today. Did you know that to support the lifestyle of a modern day middle class family in pre-18th century times would take the work of over 200 slaves.

Yeah, I have it good, eh? I have no control over my impulsive spending. Every trip to the grocery store is like trying to find rations during a zombie apocalypse. I may seem doing good from the outside by inside my mind is a completely different story.

You also need to take into account technological advances and the fact that some of us are completely dependent and under the control of the government with their welfare handouts. I would love to break free from it and live off the land with my 300 other relatives in India, but I have difficulty adjusting to change.

in the 60s-70s-80s you could be working poor and still have a roof over your head, but nowadays if one doesn't receive a middle-class income one is going to either be living with friends, or [absent friends] homeless. it takes a middle-class income just to rent a place in many parts of the country.
