Females are probably more drawn to vote considering the assumption already that males are more prevalent when ASD's are concerned. Just throwing that out there.

that's a good point. also women / girls (i balk at the word "females" for some reason i can't quite peg - as if we are animals, or the lesser of the species, i.e. whites - who don't have to specify race - and "colored people") may (?) be more likely to seek discussion (boards).

regardless, i am happy to see someone posting such a topic and had suspected there would be something between a 1:1 and 2:1 ratio with more women being self-diagnosed; at time of my posting, genders seem split as far as diagnostic level in accordance with the overall ratio (in fact, slightly higher ratio of undiagnosed / suspected male), so not what i was expecting at all. will be interesting to see this as it progresses.

ratio as of posting:
M vs. F diagnosed: 1.2:1
M vs. F un (or self) diagnosed): 1.6:1
M vs. F suspected ASD: 1.6:1

combined: 1.3:1

Oh, the only reason i used "females" and "males" instead of "women" and "men" is that i want it to be clear that i mean biological sex as opposed to gender(which is more complicated for a lot of people), so that it would stay simple. Some females don't identify with the word "woman," for example. But that's a different discussion. Anyway, i didn't want people complaining that i'm not giving them the right option, so i'm sticking with the plain and scientific "female and male" here.

Although, we ARE animals, all of us.. female and male, so of course it sounds like we're animals. Homo Sapiens, a species within the Great Ape family :D (Ape pride! lol)

But, yes, the numbers aren't what i expected either. At one point it was something like one male to six females, though.. And as it's gone on it's moved further toward what is expected. So i think the suggestion that females here just tend to spend more time looking at the boards could be correct. Because when it would start with a high number of females voting, because there's more browsing at any given time.. but since they can't vote more than once, it would even out as the males see the poll. So maybe they both come to the boards, but females tend to spend more time here?

It's also interesting that only one person without an ASD or suspected ASD has posted. I know there are some people who are here because they are family members of ASD people...

Of course this leaves no place for the intersex population, who cannot claim clear title to either biological sex. It never stays simple.

Can't win, eh?

I know, i actually thought about that. But since that's somewhat rare, and since i'm specifically looking at male to female ratios here, i decided not to include those who are intersex in the poll(plus, they only allow a certain amount of options in the poll.. so giving the separe categories "intersex with asd," "intersex without asd," etc. would probably be too much and just make the poll confusing). It also occured to me that it would pretty much be a pointless vote though when looking at male to female ratios of ASDs, because they weren't born just one sex or the other... So it would be not giving a vote to one side or the other, which are what i'm looking at here.

Male diagnosed.
I see that there isn't any NT female who answered to the poll.

Among other factors, could the high female ratio be related to the female profile? From what I've read autistic females are slightly more social as opposed to their male couterparts. So perhaps females are just more likely to seek out this sort of an online community.

Since this post I have been diagnosed as an aspie. The doctor doing the testing said I was a text book aspie. 8)

Female, diagnosed.

Part of me wonders whether the increased number of females on this forum is because females with ASDs have such a hard time finding people they relate to. There are so many more males that its much easier for a male to find another diagnosed male than a female find another diagnosed female.

I'm female and suspect it. It could be something else though. I know I have something.

Is it possible that more females voted as they just overall like polls more than males do?????? (i dont know what the ratio is of males liking polls to females liking polls.. maybe someone can actually servay people and find out.. if i ever go into the chat i think i wil do that). i myself really like polls.

Apparently yes, though the effect is too slight to account for our results here.

The people who happened to click this thread on this forum aren't an accurate representation of the entire autistic community. You need a broader test sample.

In WrongPlanet you can view people's gender and diagnostic status on their profile by simply clicking their username. Perhaps the OP should get a random number of other threads and check the posters' profiles?

I don't think it's an AS-specific thing. I think women in general are more likely to be active in communities, both online and real-life. Most volunteeers are women. Many forums have more women on them than men. Mothers are more vocal about child-related issues than fathers. It's part of gender socialization that women are supposed to be community builders.

I'm female, diagnosed at 19. It was always thought that my younger brother was the one with an ASD but as we got older, he grew out of the AS traits and mine got more noticeable.
