i live in a semi detatched house. i cant stand noise from next door. i can hear their kitchen chairs screeching along their floor even when i'm upstairs in bed. they wake me coming in drunk at 4am. it's not as bad as when i lived in a ground floor flat. i used to bang the ceiling with a broom handle in the early hours and shout stop snoring ... i wasnt very popular

there they go again next door sounds like they're dragging a piano up and down the stairs.

I'm miserable where I live now because of noise issues. I'm actually sitting in my car right now, dreading driving home because my place really doesn't feel like home at all. I feel on-edge all the time.

I have an inconsiderate neighbor, who has gotten more considerate after the landlord threatened her with eviction, but my floor and walls are paper-thin. So, even if she's not throwing a loud party or something, I can still hear every sneeze, tv show and conversation on a 'good' day. On bad days, like when someone decides to practice their electric guitar all night, for example, I just snap.

The irony is that I work with people with physical disabilities and the elderly, helping them make their homes accessible or find accessible, affordable housing, but I can't seem to find a nice, quiet, safe place for myself that I can afford.

7 months more to go on my lease ...

I've been the noisy neighbor without realizing it. This incident was pretty bad too. :-/

I used to work a 3 day week. I was living in a condo with one neighbor directly on the other side of my bedroom. With 4 days off and being a excessive video game player, it wasn't uncommon for me to be up ALL night playing. While talking with a neighbor, I discovered that she heard all the game noise. It was bad enough that she tried a white noise machine and eventually switched her bedroom to her guest room.

I felt horrible when I found out about this. It just hadn't crossed my mind that she might be hearing the game sounds, or that it went on for so long that she bought a machine and eventually moved bedrooms.

Have you tried noise-reducing headphones of any kind? There are the active noise-cancelling headphones made by Sony, Panasonic and so on, or the deluxe products from Bose - http://reviews.cnet.com/best-noise-canc ... eadphones/ - I have found that the cancellation is excellent for low frequencies like machines, engines, drilling and building work. Even noise with a lot of screeching high pitches becomes bearable with the low frequencies cut out. The biggest problem that I have is the comfort after wearing them a long time - an hour or two is my limit. You do not need to have any music or other noise playing through the headphones.

Currently I am using passive noise isolating earphones - http://www.earphonesolutions.com/coofsoiseaan.html - the ones with a rubber plug that blocks the ear canal. They cut all noise, low and high frequency, but isolate from the world more, to the extent of being much more conscious of your own breathing and blood pumping sounds - sometimes I get a little frightened that I might not hear something important. These are much more comfortable, and also very much cheaper.

I have inner ear problems (basically really bad swimmer's ear and frequent ear infections) and I've found that when I have something inserted into my ear canal overnight, fluid is not able to drain from my ears and it gets worse. So, I can wear earplugs and the like for a few hours at a time during the day, but not when I'm trying to sleep. (And, unfortunately, when I'm trying to sleep is when I want quiet the most).

I do have a small white noise machine that helps block out some noise, but would like to get a better, louder one. Can anyone recommend a certain make or model?

Some people sleep with a small radio under the pillow, sometimes tuned between stations for white noise.

I wouldn't recommend ear plugs as they can cause infection and can also make hypersensitivity to noise worse. It's thanks to 10 years of wearing the buggers that I am completely intolerant to noise :(

How come you didn't take any action yourself when no one else was willing to? Do you believe that was because of your "disorder"? You make it sound like it was a pretty big deal at the time so it makes me wonder why you'd "suffer in silence", so to speak.

That's interesting though, makes me think. I hadn't even thought about neighbours on vacation. I wonder how authorities respond to things like that, and whether or not they go easy on them, knowing that they won't be around for long, or if perhaps they're even under pressure to turn a blind eye so as not to tar the image of theie country's tourist industry, like "You can't have fun here, go elsewhere" or something. At the same time though, by ignoring it, they could give the message "you can't have peace here, go elsewhere"... I wonder which they consider more important.

Because my parents seemed to think it was against one of those stupid social rules NTs are so obsessed with, and therefore didn't let me sort the bastards out.
