Hello Alex,

Trying to understand this situation I am having a little trouble finding the figures for the expenses of running WP and how much money has been donated to WP - perhaps you could point me in the right direction on that?

Also how much money did "Autism Speaks" just give you? "Several thousands" is a rather broad statement, it could mean $5,000 or it could mean $50,000?

All I can say is that they don't speak, for me.

Unless I am mistaken, there are 37 members on that board. I don't see how one member will make so much of a difference that we should change our whole opinion of a massive oppressive organisation, especially when the board of directors remains 100% NT.

you fail to understand how boards operate. It's not as if all members of the board vote and that's it. If someone has an opposition to a research study, they can convince all the other board members not to support the study. And John has done this successfully. You should talk to him about it. I'm sure what he tells you will satisfy you and convince you that he's not just a token autistic.

They need some autistic people up in their management with real power over operations, too. I have yet to be convinced that Autism Speaks aren't doing this for PR. Though I have no doubt that John has our interests in mind, I still cannot trust Autism Speaks.

I think many of us feel abandoned by Alex over this.

To many of us, Autism speaks represent "the enemy" and all of a sudden we see alex working with them, happily.

I understand what your saying alex, but to many of us, you are our advocate, in some cases even our hero.

who will fight with us now, who will tell us a truth we can believe in, since whatever your saying from now on, is clouded by the money from autism speaks?

Wrong planet has a view of autistic people, that i see as absolutely different than that of autism speaks. I cannot see how the two can function together.

If there was really a need for funds this badly, I would have hoped that you would have just asked us Alex. I would have gladly paid.

I think now is the time for wrong planet members and leaders to especially voice any concern they might have about autism speaks. Since now we have Alex who will be invited to all the social gatherings, and fundraisers.

Id like to see alex talk about the value of autistic people, the right for us to exist and to behave autistic, at autism speaks events.

I think it's important for self-appointed advocates to hear the thoughts and feelings of those for whom they're supposed to be advocating. But, it might be better for people to write or email Autism Speaks directly about concerns, rather than expecting Alex to act as some sort of liason.

There is a lot of diversity on WP, in terms of opinions and viewpoints. Even if Alex did feel it was his responsibility to speak on our behalf, I doubt we could come up with any kind of a consensus.

There seems to be consensus when it comes to 'Autism Speaks".

That's pretty telling.

I'd have no problem with Alex speaking for us if his message was positive. And he stopped taking money from the enemy.

Autism will never be eliminated by genetic testing. Such testing will only be affordable to a small percentage of the world. Do you really think Bangladesh has the resources for such screening? So what will happen is that in their efforts to remove anomalies, the developed world will also sacrifice the brilliance of some autistics. But the countries with limited resources will continue to have autistic children, some of whom will be brilliant, one of those which will of course be so brilliant he/she will rule the world.

Change will never happen. NTs will never let it happen. End of story.

Aspies run the world. All the great people at the very least have Aspie traits. We have already succeeded, right under the noses of the NTs.

So why don't the millionaire Aspies share their wealth with Aspies around the world? Just like the Native American Indians do with their casino profits, they give and support other tribes and peoples.

Because it's their money and they can do what the hell they want with it. They have no obligation to share it with anyone.

Besides, we're in a capitalist society, this isn't socialism.

Asperger Syndrome is being phased out in 2012 in the DSM V, and being placed into "Autism Spectrum Disorder".

Even if genetic testing is created for ASDs, it'd be very unethical to abort the foetus especially because ASD is a spectrum, and some people can be high functioning with talents... :x

Probably a good idea. Though I don't think Alex goes to Autism Speaks events.
