Stress either over-loads my mind and I go into depressed mode, or extreme stress shuts my mind down so that I can no longer express myself anymore. At best I babble then have to lay down staring into the distance for up to eight hours.

I experience mild and severe autism, both ends of the spectrum, and of course "The experts” don’t have a clue to how or why my mind does this.

I'm going to agree with everyone else here and say with conviction, "Yes."

I'm going to be a moron and say no. For me, it is relaxing that flares Asperger's symptoms. Stress, mixed with attempts to control it with brain power, make me more normal than not stressing.

Hi all,

Does stress flare anyone's Aspergers' symptoms? Both the good and the bad? When I'm working on a project (I'm a grad student) and come under extraordinary stress, I become unbearably churlish and even more socially withdrawn but my mind begins firing on all cylinders and actually come up with some really awesome stuff. Does this sound like something other Aspies have experienced?

Thanks all,
Spudster

I can answer in regards to traits I share as I have not yet been assessed. I can certainly confirm that the more stressed one is the more likely the traits come forth. Faceblindness is a good example. Now I don't know if I can recognise people or not (As I often find out through other people), but I believe I may have more issues when I am stressed.
Also, when working and stressed I have big issues. Mostly partial shutdowns and the effects associated with them.

YES. I usually am fine but at the moment, being under high levels of stress my symptoms are showing up way more. I'm usually semi decent at understanding people but when I'm stressed that goes out the window. For example I know smile = happiness in most cases but may even question that as I may mix things up when I'm stressed. It's like driving in the dark.

My sensory things get worse as well, to the point I'm going to start to have to wear sunglasses to school. I also stim more, with new ones popping up. I used to only rub things and occasionally rock but now I tip toe, balance, rock very obviously, even when I'm standing and out of nowhere I'm getting sensory issues with my clothes.
