When I was in my early teens I was obsessed with my hair being as long as possible - luckily long hair wasn't the fashion then and I didn't have too much competition (competition made me ache with jealousy), but still it didn't get much longer than waist length and was scraggy at the ends. That obsession only ended at 16 when I had it cut to shoulderlength to tidy it up a bit, and it has stayed around that length ever since.
As a teenager I washed it rarely (far less than I should have done), then would blowdry to try to get it straight, but it always went really fluffy. After I stopped caring about my hair and going swimming regularly, I realised that in fact it looks a lot better if I just wash it, comb through whilst wet and leave to dry naturally. So in fact doing stuff to it is a waste of time as it actually looks worse. It is slightly curly and will dry in waves naturally. It never looks as good the next day and I usually just put it up, although have got into the habit of washing it most mornings because I like the way it feels when clean. I have always hated hairdressers, but considered them necessary once a year or so to get a straight trim, however in the last couple of years I have started cutting it myself and realised I can do it pretty well (probably wouldn't work with straight hair, but curly hair can take some variation in lengths) and sometimes better than some of the trims I paid for.
