Yes, and that shows error on his part, Jamesy, not yours.

Only they could answer that, but no answer they gave would ever justify their having said that. We are all in this together.

Yeah its amusing they also said I have "Zearo" social skills without even meeting me. some of the posters though were just silly teenagers.

Maybe Xenu, Lengixton and Batshit should come on this thread and tell me why they said that?????

Lexington only lives down the road from me virtually so maybe we could meet up and discuss what they mean by that :D

I understand and you're right. I was making assumptions based off the limited information provided in the film. We only see what we see and we also have to factor in that treatment for auties isn't like what it is today so people's responses to him and judgment of his abilities probably wouldn't be on par with what they would be today.

I think Callista hits on your point when she says:

We're making a lot of assumptions about the character in trying to address Jamesy's concerns. A lot of our assumptions do involve stereotypes that we know are false, but were firmly upheld in the Rainman movie. It's like we take it as true for the character itself while acknowledging that reality is different. Otherwise, I think we're better off just shelving Rainman completely.

If you are feeling fragility about the way you project yourself to others, I would hesitate to invite others to elaborate on their criticisms of you. Sometimes criticism is constructive; other times it is just plain wrong, or useless, or dangerously accurate but not necessarily the kind of thought process you want to identify with... either be prepared to heavily defend yourself and launch counter-attack, or don't dig in a s**t slinging zone in the first place.

If I were you, I'd take being called Rainman a compliment. The character was based on a real life savant. You could say his functionality is asymmetrical, in a sense, as his ability for memory is so great, but his social ability is lacking. And as an Aspie myself, as most of you should, I take great pride in the fact that we are gifted in certain areas, more so than any neurotypical could ever hope to be. I would absolutely love to have his functioning in memory, and Einstein's ability in mathematics, etc. If someone has AS or is somewhere on the spectrum, they have deficits and disabilities, but they also have amazing gifts. Because our lives can be so difficult at times trying to function in a neurotypical society, I believe we should do our very best to develop our skills and talents, because that is our shining light. For me, it's electronics, and whatever it is for you guys, let it enrich your life.

Just remember: just because it's all in your head doesn't mean it isn't real!
I kid, I kid.

But to be serious, look Rainman is a movie a lot of people have seen, so it's easily used as a stereotype. You may not be like that at all, it's just, well they picked the nearest possible thing they know. I get it too occasionally even though I'm nothing like Rainman and my reaction to someone dropping toothpicks would be less counting and more sarcastic comments like "Nice moves dude". I get it more from people who know about the AS than the ones who don't (the ones who don't tend to stereotype me by nationality instead). It's just something people do, once anything reminds them of the stereotype of someone who belongs to your group you get accused of being exactly like that basis of the stereotype. It happens to me over my nationality a lot, and I'm nothing like who I get accused of being at those times any more than Rainman - even I'm not that weird.
