Maybe the dentist (in the OP) was very uneducated about autism. My boyfriend doesn't know about autism because all his family seem to all be very outgoing NTs (except maybe for his son but he's not got ASD though), and what my boyfriend does know about autism is probably the very black and white stereotypes like being severely incapable of communicating. So if I ever got emotionally brave enough to come out of the closet and told him I have an ASD, he wouldn't believe it for a second, even though we've been together for 6 years and we've been living together for 3 years!
