There is a romantic film called "Dear John" with Channing Tatum playing a soldier who falls in love with a girl when he is on home leave. His father has some autistic traits and although the film doesn't state I think John (Tatum) has autistic traits too.

I like the Fox TV series "Bones". Zack and Temperence show AS traits.

I have seen Adam and wasn't overly impressed. One of the deleted scenes was the most important in the whole film, and the fact that the editors deleted it proves they don't understand AS.

Which one was that? I remember watching the deleted scenes on the DVD when I rented it, but I can't quite recall them.

I always though Steve Buscemi's character in the movie Ghost World was as Aspy as it gets, even though it's never said in the film. God....what a depressing character.

The scene where they're outside waiting for the cab, and Adam flips out because he doesn't understand how people "read each other's minds." He and Beth are arguing about his social missteps with the lesbian couple at the party.

I don't remember it, so maybe I didn't see it. Or maybe my awful memory is just at work again. I remember the party scene, though. I don't necessarily think that deleting a scene in which Beth and Adam argue over his social missteps proves that the filmmakers didn't understand AS. They probably deleted it because there were several other scenes like that, for instance, when Beth rips into Adam after he meets her father and asks him blunt questions about his going to jail.

Never seen the latter, but the former is a mildly enjoyable action movie.

I watched Snow Cake 2 days ago. It helped me a lot. I saw how people might see me, and it helped me see why people don't understand me.

Not a movie but the tv show Skins has an autistic character in it. 90% of his story is his friends being dicks to him but at least he gets a happy ending if you're into that. If you're interested he's one of the main characters in series 3 & 4.

I probably wouldn't like a movie with autistic/asperger's characters in it. I feel like it's just going to be weird people acting weird (which I hate), and then against all reasonable odds they find happiness with an attractive girl or something. Seems a bit cliche to be honest when the ret*d finds happiness. Or maybe I'm just a miserable as*hole haha.. I don't know.

Rather than some romance story or whatever, I'd definitely be interested in something that explores the darker stuff that can come about from it. Loneliness, hopelessness, anger etc. but preferably with a bad ending, which is how these things can go without significant intervention I think.

What do you guys think, do you want something uplifting or do you want to see something that doesn't try and pretend that everythings going to be alright?

I am afraid to watch movies about AS, because I am afraid that the character portrayals will be really inaccurate/unnatural/gawdawful, and this will cause me to have a meltdown, perhaps at the same time that the character is having a meltdown.

For the longest time, portrayals of autistic people made me acutely uncomfortable and self-conscious. They still did over the past year - I liked the movies, just had trouble responding to the characters. Adam and Mary & Max provoked this reaction the least and I think Mozart and the Whale provoked it the most.

I think some of the portrayals seem exaggerated (based on people I've seen in youtube videos) but I don't really hold a strong opinion on that.

I recently watched 'Zodiac' and felt the makers were trying to hint that the main character (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) had Aspergers, although it wasn't mentioned at all. It's based on a true story and I don't know what the real Robert Graysmith is actually like, but I've read that he's an eccentric obsessive and doesn't answer his own phone.

I came across this forum post cause I was Googling 'Robert Graysmith' and 'Asperger's' cause I have a feeling that would be an accurate label for him. He admits to living alone and spending weeks without seeing other people. I find the Zodiac case fascinating so I saw the movie recently and was interested in the way Graysmith was portrayed.
