Is dancing an NT thing?
Back in the day (and we're talking 20 years) I used to enjoy dancing in clubs. But that was then and this is now. I takes a dark room, lots of alcohol and the right kind of music, so I don't think I'll find that combination again.
Sober and observing others dancing (and to the wrong kind of music, which is by definition anything I don't like) the whole thing does look rather foolish. Last year while walking on the Embankment I watched a large boat with what was obviously a private party slowly moving down the Thames. It was the afternoon and so you could easily see all the people through the windows dancing away to the cheesy music that was emanating from inside. I laughed so hard it almost hurt.
I expect there are probably some people on the spectrum who are good dancers and enjoy dancing. To be completely honest, I'm definitely not one of them.
I don't enjoy dancing. I'm always self-conscious and feel like I'm doing things wrong, and generally in a dance lesson I tend to end up either getting confused and stopping or doing things on the wrong side for a long time before I realise!
I'll dance alone to a dance DVD in my room, as long as nobody's watching. I do enjoy that, as long as there's nobody there to laugh at my mistakes!
Me and my aspie wife have done a lot of ballroom latin, she wants to do latin while I am more keen on folk and ballroom. I am more keen on very rapid folk dancing than she is, she thinks the faster and rougher folk dancing is like a blood sport. Some of the people I have done folk dancing with have treated it as an extreame sport. It is best done totally sober in a pair of comfortable shoes, I have escaped serious injury but I have had my fair share of minor injury.
I have noticed at folk dancing events that a lot of computer professionals are present, in some ways folk and ballroom/latin is like FORTRAN. You have a library of commands in FORTRAN which you call in different orders depending on what you are doing.
If you are doing formal dancing with a partner (such as folk couples or set folk dancing) you tend to have either have a cycle of steps or in ballroom/latin no set cycle exists, it is up to the man to rapidly select a series of library steps to allow him to move in a graceful manner around the floor avoiding other couples and fixed objects.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.
