Oh, well. It was still really fun kicking the crutches out from under those mustard-gas-poisoned WWI veterans.

You might think I am crazy for saying this.

Recently, I have come to believe that autism is just god's way of punishing someone who (in their previous life) made fun of/teased/insulted/abused handicapped people. I also believe that how severe their autism is based on how frequently they mistreated handicapped people. By this, I mean, the more they mistreated handicapped people in one life, the more severe their autism is in their next life.

1. If a person seldomly picked on handicapped people in one life, then God doesn't give them autism at all in their next life.
2. If a person occasionally picked on handicapped people, then God gives them a mild form of autism in their next life.
3. If a person constantly picked on handicapped people, then God gives them a severe form of autism in their next life.

What do you guys think of this?

What an insensitive post. I was harassed over and over again by my minister into a faith healing, because of AS, which he was absolutely adamant was an illness. It was the start of the loss of my faith.

Now that (judging from the many posts made on this subject) I see that a good deal of people have taken offense to this post, I apologize (and feel remorseful) for even making this insensitive post in the first place.

I assume this thread is about reincarnation. Okay so if I picked on handicapped people occasionally let's say and then I died and became alive again, I got cursed with AS.

I have always thought if you picked on handicapped people, god can give you a child with special needs as a punishment. Though I don't believe in god but some people believe this. They call it karma.

No offense taken here. It be good to post your apology in your OP where everyone can see it so they don't keep replying to this thread taking offense.

Even though the original post came off as trolling, I can understand the sentiment on a personal level because throughout my youth I thought about the whys so many times. At one point I entertained I was an evil person in a past life. It sounds ridiculous when scope is taken into consideration (I'm not talking mouthwash, either.)

It's easy to go into self pity mode and forget that most people on the planet suffer misfortunes of some kind. I'm not the only one. Doubtful it has anything to do with past lives, just the luck of the draw. What I want is more good luck. If I am capable of bad luck seems logical I am just as capable of having good.

The key is to find pathways to good fortune and that often involves taking risks that can often lead - you guessed it - to more bad luck.

Oh well. You never know until you try.

I think I may have missed something here, but based on the replies, I suppose this is a good thing.

I don't see the point of looking for mystical, theological, or otherwise teleological reasons for being autistic or that otherwise happen. We're autistic because of a combination of genetic vulnerability and environmental stimuli that brings autism about.

I have wondered about reincarnation and circumstances of my present life being the outcome of behavior in past lives, but I came to the conclusion that wondering about these things has little meaning due to the complete lack of falsifiability. That is, I don't specifically think that reincarnation or some other kind of afterlife is impossible, but since it is ultimately unprovable and unobservable it is a complete waste of time to try to find reasons and explanations on the basis of such things. In other words, it cannot possibly be relevant to the question of whether or not I am autistic.

I feel similarly about the idea of God (any god, really) punishing us. I like the scripture that says it just is, although the world itself has enough explanation to make it clear that divine intervention is unnecessary.

I don't see being autistic as a curse.

It's other people who are the curse - discriminatory jerks who treat autistics badly.
