In general, 0.6 percent of children are diagnosed with autism,
Where I am that number is closer to 2% (1 in 50).
Anyway, a thought on why children born prematurely may be autistic more often is that one of the causes of premature birth can be the result of the mother having an unusually small or malformed uterus so even if the mother doesn't present as autistic herself she still may have a genetic mutation that can be passed on and may manifest as autism (this is why my son was premature), another reason could be that the mother is suffering from some sort of illness or infection that leads to a premature birth and those things can also affect development.
Edit: Just read an article stating that an autism research team found a 3% autism rate when they screened 1,000 kids from underserved/rural towns in my state, so 2% may still be an understatement.
Another edit: I'm a little disturbed now, when my son was diagnosed a little over two years ago I remember looking up the rate for my state and it was 1 in 50 boys and I've just read an article siting that it's now 1 in 29 boys (1 in 50 overall), I really really hope that just means they're just acknowledging subtle manifestations of Asperger's/HFA more and that these aren't all kids with more profound problems.
