Just because I don't say the socially appropriate response to a joke doesn't mean I don't understand it. I probably don't find it amusing and would rather not lie about it.

That we all function at the same level and have the exact same traits as Rain Man.

For autism it would probably be the myth that compares us to psychopaths. My current obsession is psychopathy, trust me I know we're not psychopaths!

For PTSD (my other diagnosis) my least favorite myth is the idea that being abused makes you turn evil. It seems like in many stories if a seemingly good side character mentions that he/she was abused, you can pretty much guarantee that person will be revealed to be a villain. And they never act badly in ways that are actually common for abused people (eg acting out of a warped worldview that makes sense given their experiences), instead they're just an ordinary one-sided cartoony villain.

For Newson Syndrome, what most annoys me is when I explain that it means I don't like being told what to do and people say 'no one likes to be told what to do'. Well, maybe, but they don't have panic attacks over it and decide they'd rather die than obey an everyday command.

The worst myths:
We are more likely to sexually harrass somebody
We don't have emotions
We don't have souls
We're all perverted
We're all annoying anime fans
We're stupid/useless/ret*d.

Also, lack of imagination
Bullcrap.
I can imagine whole worlds if I close my eyes, in every detail. To the shimmering blue colour of the sky, to the lush fields of green that roll with the warm breeze; Even the smell of freshly cut grass in the air, and the sound of the birds singing in the trees.

My sense of humour is awesome.

This myth pisses me off the most. I quoted it because it basically sums up what I was gonna say.

It's funny how I went through school BY MYSELF, learned to drive BY MYSELF, and a multitude of other things yet I'm still treated as some monosyllabic mouth-breathing mongoloid.

1, All Autistic people are completely identical, if you aren't like Classic Autism/Rainman then you're "faking"
2, After explaining that we aren't all identical and showing a book on Aspergers, they read it as the "literal truth", either that professionals opinions or the Autistic author's account is complete and utter truth. All Aspies are like this one or few accounts.

The rest are issues resulting from these 2 similar myths.

3, All Autistic/AS people have terrible sensory issues, which are the same. We all "hate noise" is a common one (some love noise and I don't mind it)

4, Aspies are obsessed with a certain type of obsessions, and there are AS(unusual) and NT(ordinary) obsessions. This is simply untrue, the AS nature is obsessive and we can be obsessed with stereotypical obsessions (Trains, Science, Computers), common AS obsessions, "geeky" interests or "normal" interests (an Aspie could be obsessed with something that is a common interest)

There are more but I won't get into them here, maybe a blog

For some reason, after seeing this post, I am looking for someone with the perfect ratios of 1:4:9

For some reason I get the feeling evil people probably would not get PTSD, I mean how to do you tramatize an evil person?

YES, that is an issue I face. In my account Aspies are typically MORE imaginative, or at least certain groups.

I imagine lots of things and NTs often think I have a "great imagination" but to me it is that they lack it.

i have not heard any "myths" about asperger syndrome except for what i read on this site.

in real life, no one i know has heard of asperger syndrome, let alone has preconceived notions of it.

when i have to reveal that i have asperger syndrome (which i do to people who are employing me), they are intrigued, but they know i am quite capable and sensible in executing my obligations.

they usually make special allowances for me, and they are perplexed at how socially stupid i am considering that i can understand other things so well. my bosses all feel i am "special", and they protect me from situations where problems may occur for me, because they think that they alone can understand me,

i have never heard spoken opinions about asperger syndrome in my world.

Heh. My ratios are perfect, but they are nothing like that. ;)

Seriously, though, I am not sure what you are referring to. Could you clarify, please?

i think some people assume all autistic people are either psychopaths incapable of feeling love for anyone and who might attack without provocation, or that we're helpless and can't hold down a job or live on our own, and that we can't fend for ourselves/defend ourselves. either psychopaths or victims.
oh, and "you can't be autistic if you can talk." every person using this forum can talk - and type.
and that being an aspie is the wrost thing that can happen to anyone. my life is over. we don't have a life. what a tragedy it is i can't be like everyone else. i don't even want to be like everyone else. what a bore. my parents thought when i was a teen it's just horrible i wasn't like other kids my age and wasn't doing the same things kids my age did, those wonderful things: talking about boys and dresses and maybe smoking a cancer stick in secret. like i was missing out on the most exciting thing, the eight wonder of the world. like if you're not like everyone else then you're not as good as anyone else, either.
