My voice is kind of on the higher pitched side. If I try, I can make my voice sound so deep that's it's almost masculine. My voice is usually high though especially when I get all excited. Then I usually sound like a 6-year-old girl who just sucked in helium

There have actually been studies investigating prenatal and postnatal testosterone levels in males and females and their possible correlation to ASDs. There seems to be a positive correlation between higher testosterone levels and autistic behaviours according to researchers such as Simon Baron-Cohen, after much analysis of many double blind tests by him and his colleagues. One test looked at prenatal testosterone exposure for the fetuses and their behaviour traits 8 years later! There indeed seemed to be a correlation between autistic behaviours and higher testosterone in prenatal stages. Highly interesting. 8) This would, of course, mean that you have a higher chance of having more testosterone than average for your gender if you are an autistic individual. (Could explain my large adam's apple, fast muscle growth and high metabolic rate).

More than once I have gotten that I sound like chill Californian stoner/surfer dude...its not like I try to, I guess that is just my voice. I mean I do consume cannabis but I am not from California and I've never surfed in my life.

Also I can easily sing along with Roger Waters vocals from Pink Floyd...but not so much more melodic singers...lol.

And apparently I mumble more than I mean to.

I think I'm pretty average for a female. I can't do that high-pitched scream though, and I prefer to sing male vocals.

I've been told by family and friends that I have a loud and deep voice that carries far. But it's very hard for me too know if im being too loud or not. And sometimes don't know that I am until im told I am.

I think my voice is pretty low and quiet, almost a whisper at times. I've been told I have a distinct New England accent.

I have a very childish voice. I have had people in the past even mention it to me, especially people I talk to on the phone. They think I'm a child, except that right now I'm 25 years old. Fine by me. I don't want to grow up anyway :D

I have a rather low female voice too. I have a theory.

The vocal cords are longer when you're not using it. You use energy to make it shorter, and shorter vocal cords result in higher pitched voiced.

It is common for aspies/autistics to have weaker muscle tone. Since aspies/autistics sometimes have weaker muscle tone, it takes more energy for them to make the vocal cords shorter. (The vocal cords aren't muscle, but they are controlled by muscles.) So they just speak without shortening the vocal as much, producing a lower voice.

I know that doesn't explain the high voice, but it IS a spectrum, right?

When I was younger, I had a high sounding voice. I think it is more average sounding for a woman now.

I'm mostly nearly mute. But when I get excited I may become loud even in inappropriate places. It feels like I have no control over my voice.

My voice isn't low at all, it sounds annoyingly girly despite my best efforts. :) If certain genetic predispositions come with being on the spectrum, e.g. gastrointestinal issues, then it wouldn't surprise me if there were more traits out there that we or any other 'group' of people are more likely to possess.

Our speaking pitch is far from a simple biological thing, its very much culturally proscribed. For example, I notice that many women born in South East Asia (I grew up there) speak at a /much/ lower pitch than Americans with SE Asian ancestory.

I suspect that owing to mass media, the culturally proscribed "ideal pitch" (barf) for women has been going up, as it signals greater "femininity" on the heterosexual scene (since, on average, men have longer vocal folds, and thus lower pitch). As mass media sinks in, NTs tend to very much emulate dominant trends and patterns...

I suspect if anything, NT women may have an artificially over-accentuated high pitch, compared to female Aspies who may be speaking with what's biologically closer to their 'natural' voice pitch.
