Hey Nintendofan!
I'm not AS either, I'm not even autistic! I feel kind of left out, because my neurophysiology is very, very rare and very, very often misdiagnosed (my mom opted not to get me a formal diagnosis). I was originally right-brain dominant (right brain controls left side of the body, so I would've been a leftie!) but then (undetected at the time) my oxygen supply late in my prenatal development was severely depleted. This caused irreparable damage to the dominant right hemisphere of the brain (but intelligence was unaffected, as only the parts of the brain with the greatest oxygen need are affected in short hypoxia situations). As a result, I was left with poor social skills, poor attention span, reduced nerve control to my once-dominant left hand (which made me ambisinister), obsessions, overall disorganization, inability to understand sarcasm, similes, metaphors, etc. (had to teach myself the overall rules of them, but if I see one that's unlike any one I've ever seen, I won't get it), poor spacial relations, and some difficulty grasping abstract concepts.
So yeah....this is so rare that it doesn't even have a label. The closest its got is this - Hypoxic Perinatal Right-Hemisphere Somatic Brain Insult. It's also known as global cross-laterality because to compensate, the brain moves some of its functions to the previously nondominant side, so you end up using both sides of your brain.

I don't think anyone should have to feel left out here. Haven't been here long, but I'd say that that's what this place stands for; while specifically made for those with autism or aspergers in their lives, it is against the very idea of discrimination. So please don't be afraid to post or give your two cents or whatever else. I'm sure that most people here would be accepting.

I'm still searching for the answer whether I'm really at the mildest end of the spectrum (read: "super-HFA"), or my other abilities, like well-above-average IQ and stamina (and possibly fortune with upbringing and life) are responsible for the thing they've given me a PDD-NOS diagnosis (meaning I might be "lower" on the spectrum, but somehow I compensate well, at least in certain fields of life, not all). Yesterday the psychs who evaluated me openly told me that I look too HF for having even Asperger's... And, (listen!) they admitted it is "politically more apt", meaning, everyone, even the specialists, understand it better, and consequently they would be less confused with this diagnosis...
Ok, I translated this to "we wouldn't give (extensive) help to you, since you are smart, figure out yourself every problem you might have", meaning, I'm left on my own devices. Back to square one.
Anyway, Classic Autism is still better regarded here than PDD-NOS, though I see your problem, I feel the same. I'm seriously thinking I would leave this site and try to apply all the knowledge I gathered in the past year to help myself to get along and move further with my life (I'm rubbish at romantic relationships at age 38 and I definitely have problems with connecting with people, affecting my career, too), maybe finally I could get some REAL professional help. At this moment I don't see how I will do it, but I'm determined to keep trying.

As many autistic, I have an uneven pattern of abilities, and it's reflected by the IQ-subscales. I'm slow, in fact, I'm below average, and my verbal IQ, while decent, is lower than the remaining two subscales (that are high). So, it's not surprising, that in many respect I can relate better to people who are more classically autistic than those who are more stereotypically Asperger's in the narrower sense (they possess relatively better verbal skills). I know my symptoms are usually less pronounced and I appreciate that people with Classic Autism must have it harder than me.

Which Nintendo console do you have? My sister got my nephew a Wii, but I've only played it maybe a couple of times. On the other hand, I played the original NES quite a bit, especially Mario, and I loved Tiny Toon as well. I can see you're a Zelda fan.
nice to meet you, give you two cents or whatever else, you said, what does that mean is that a american thing

Autistic, Writer and Geek >3 be warned
I honestly don't know whether I'm HFA or AS, and if anyone can tell me based on the rest of this post, that would be great. I was diagnosed AS, but I had a language delay until I was 4 or 5. This scares me because everyone with AS develops normally in that aspect.
I also feel that my social skills are less than those of someone with AS. The keyword there is feel. I don't really know for sure yet. I used to had friends in grade school who I would hang out with and talk to, although once I was homeschooled, they slowly went their separate ways. Now all my friends are online. In addition, I've never had much interest in posting on these forums, but maybe now I'm breaking out of my shell. Hopefully that means I'm AS and not HFA.
However, I am advanced in other aspects, such as academics. I'm making good grades in high school and am planning to get into college. I understand humor perfectly, including sarcasm and irony. I am pretty independent as well. I can take care of myself, and am going to get my driver's license soon. I don't have a job yet, though.
