I don't hate maths. I don't love maths though. I am just very crap at maths, and it's always going to be a weakness. But just because I am no good at maths doesn't mean I hate maths. It's better than science. At school science was too complicated, especially when we done equations and things like that. It was so boring yet so complicated and there was nothing fun or interesting about it.

And I like English because I'm good at spelling. No offense but people who can't spell properly get on my nerves. But I suppose people who are good at maths say that about me.

Do you have to use the word ''all''? I'm certainly not a math whiz. And I know a lot of NTs who are good at maths or enjoy it.

Joe, I certainly don't mean to stereotype. If you scroll back up and read my last post, you'll see that I asked because a question of math ability or a liking of math is often brought up on assessments for ASDs, and this indicated to me that it might be one of the more firm/common traits. My exact concern was the same as yours...that there is some indication that we ALL have an affinity for math, rather than only some of us. :)

By the way, out of curiousity, why do many of you refer to 'math' as 'maths'? I assume this is because there are many different areas of math, and that perhaps one can be efficient and one type and not the others, but I view 'math' as an overarching term that could mean any of these. Not to offend, but 'maths' sounds plain silly to me, as if it were a typo. :?

I also don't hate math. It is an universal language and it must be pretty nice to understand it, not to mention very useful.
But I'm very bad at it. I have many problems related to the world of numbers. I think I may have dyscalculia since all of these apply to me:
-Frequent difficulties with arithmetic
-Difficulty with everyday tasks like reading analog clocks
-Inability to comprehend financial planning or budgeting, sometimes even at a basic level; for example, estimating the cost of the items in a shopping basket or balancing a checkbook
-Difficulty with multiplication-tables, and subtraction-tables, addition tables, division tables, mental arithmetic, etc.
-Difficulty with conceptualizing time and judging the passing of time. May be chronically late or early
-Particularly problems with differentiating between left and right
- Difficulty reading musical notation
-Difficulty sight-reading music, learning fingering to play an instrument, etc.
-They might use their fingers to count and do simple addition, far beyond the age when it's normally done.
-Might do exceptionally well in a writing-related field
-Difficulty navigating or mentally "turning" the map to face the current direction rather than the common North=Top usage
-Having particular difficulty mentally estimating the measurement of an object or distance (e.g., whether something is 10 or 20 feet (3 or 6 metres) away).
-Often unable to grasp and remember mathematical concepts, rules, formulae, and sequences
-When writing, reading and recalling numbers, these common mistakes are made: number additions, substitutions, transpositions, omissions, and reversals.
-Students understand material as they are being shown it, but when they must retrieve the information they become confused and are unable to do so. They may be able to perform mathematics operations one day, but draw a blank the next. May be able to do book work but can fails all tests and quizzes.
.... and so on.
But I'm very good at learning languages and see patterns in related languages easily (at least at reading and writing).

I sailed through math... until I got to Calculus II (the point where "math" went from being an applied skill to being more of a fine art). Then, I fell flat on my face, and "died the death of a thousand cuts" -- mostly, due to careless mistakes. It would be putting it *mildly* to say that it was an *epic* blow to my self-esteem :-(

So, from what I've read, Aspies are supposed to love math and essentially despise English (unless something related to English is a special interest). However, this is not me at all!

This is not me either. I love languages and always had top grades in German and English, but I'm not very good at math.

I can't say I love math but I use it a lot, though I rely on calculators to do the actual number crunching. Trig and elementary algebra are no problem. I pretty much hit a brick wall with calculus. I can understand the basic theory of calculus but it doesn't really click in my mind. Even after repeating a year I only just scraped through my exams on calculus.

Math is one of my favorite subjects and I get most of it. I'm in calculus I this year. The class itself isn't that hard but my teacher is crappy. Math is my second best subject to science. English is my worst subject. I would rather be working in a lab than analyzing fiction and learning grammar.

I would rather remove my own toe nails with a hammer and a set of pliers than do any math more complex than multiplication and division.

I am currently doing a Master's degree in maths. I love maths, especially topology and logic. But I think that numbers are boring!

The "structure" of systems of numbers is interesting, but knowing how to quickly add numbers in my head, etc. isn't very interesting to me. That's what we have calculators for!

"Maths" is standard in New Zealand, and I assume it's also standard in the UK, Australia, etc.

That's pretty much how I feel about math.

I have obsessive rituals where I have to count to the number six but math is a challenge for me.
I am quite good at number patterns like what would be found on an I.Q. test but I failed math in school on several occasions.
I excel in every arts and humanities subject. History,Creative Writing,Advanced art, music appreciation,Sociology,Environmental Science, and civil rights were some of my best subjects.

The stereotype that all aspies like math is both ignorant and harmful.

I don't like math. I am not really bad at it or anything but I'm not the best. Math up until grade 3 is extremely easy for me, grade 4-6 math is fairly easy; I don't struggle with but I am not a whiz at it either. Grade 7 and some of grade 8 math is doable for me. I may struggle a little bit, but I can still do it. I have a hard time with high school math though. Luckily, we have a course we can take at our school that you can still graduate with, but uses less advanced math. At this point, I am not required to take a math course ever again! Yeah!
