I find the sound of speech to be very distracting and mentally invasive, to the point where it's hard to focus on the conversation I'm trying to have, or the magazine I'm trying to read. Any kind of sound distracts me, really.

Yes... I despise it. I really, really do. Especially when I'm trying my absolute best to listen to one person in particular. I feel like I have a thousand voices speaking to me at once; I can't even hear the person over everyone else, even if all of the background noise is far off. *Siiiigh* This happened today and I just nodded and said "uh-huh," since I had NO idea what they said. I also use "Oh, that's cool" when I can't hear the person.

Haha - "Oh that's cooL" - I do the same thing but slightly differently. I just nod. If I respond with words, then that might confuse things.

All this time I thought I was the only one experiencing over-stimulation of sound.

I DO confuse them, too. Makes me laugh. They just go "Are you okay, Kinme?" and then I tell them that I am or tell them I'm tired (I look tired most of the time, anyway). You definitely aren't. This would be hilarious: two Aspies talking and this happening. Hahahaha!

For me it's opposite. I can only concentrate on one conversation at a time. I can only process one thing at a time and I have to really try hard to understand what I'm hearing or else it just sounds like noise to me.

Similar. In crowded environments, *everything* is noise. Even watching the mouth of someone talking to me doesn't help. :(
