Yes, but I learned three years late, because I was worried about my poor coordination and inattention. The coordination came with practice, I still have to force myself to pay attention.

I totally zoned out one time and ran a red light. Worst zone out of my life I think, I didn't even realize I had done anything until I heard someone yelling at me which was like fingers being snapped in front of my face, waking me up. I remember feeling my heart just pounding in my chest. I couldn't get home fast enough.

I'm very reluctant to learn; I have my permit (and have since I was 15), but it's so terribly stressful, trying to remember all those steps at once while simultaneously making sure other people aren't about to run me off the road. I had a terrible experience with an aggressive ex-cop ex-marine driving instructor who basically thought I was completely useless and taught me in such a manner that I was too afraid of him and his impatient rebukes to remember anything he taught me! I sort of wish I knew how because the public transport where I live isn't great, and it takes large chunks out of my day, but for the time being I'm probably stuck with it. It's made all the worse by the fact that my sister turned 15 two months ago and has been itching to learn ever since.

I've driven for about 20 years and love it.

i didn't get my driver's license until i was 20, & i had a lot of initial resistance to the idea.
it still bothers me how recklessly people wield these immensely powerful machines, as if they were unaware of the potential for damage, to themselves or others.
i have since become a skilled driver, & appreciate a smooth highway if there's no other car on the road (like a tv car commercial)--which is not how i mostly experience driving.
most of the time it's creeping in traffic, anxious to keep from being hit by idiots, & i would love to be able to get around without cars in a european-style city with mass transit that goes everywhere.

I didn't get mine until I was 19 and that was after driving two years without one. It was harmless though, I would just go down the street to the store or something. Still it was experience right? Well trying to go to wal-mart one day was a whole different ball game. There was a traffic stop and as any late teenager without a drivers license in a car would do I freaked out, slammed on the breaks in the middle of the road and turned into the nearest parking lot. It was this storage shed place.

I figured I would sit there and make it look like I had business there and then just pull out and head back the other way and go home but a cop pulled up behind me. I am terrified of jail, completely terrified of it and I lied to the officer and told him I left my license at home. He told me if I kept lying I would go to jail so as scared as I was I told the truth hoping he wasn't trying to psych me out. Thankfully he was a nice cop. I think he could tell I was scared and I meant no harm. I was just trying to go and pay some bills.

He drove me home and I still got a ticket. Due to lawyers advice it looked good on me to get a license so I did and I got the ticket thrown out of court. It was all worth it, I can legally drive now at least.

I have been driving for over 7 years now (got my driver's license back in June 2005) and my close friends say that I am a better driver than any one else their age (early-mid 20s) they know.

Yah, I drive. I hope that you tell off those people that tell you that you that you shouldn't drive. I get a lil testy when people treat me like I'm inferior because I'm different.

I thought 'classic autism' was a more polite term for low functioning autism? Did I misunderstand that then?

P.s. Absolutely no offence intended - just trying to understand the high-functioning classic terminology.

I got the licence, but I don't want to drive, especially long distances.

I get slight panic when I try to drive through my city during rush hour.
And when I try to drive long distances I get really bored and have troubles of keeping my speed under the limit without looking at the speed meter
every 2 seconds... I also get really nervous if I have somebody driving behind me.

I dont mind driving. I used to drive when I was younger, but now I only drive a couple of times per year when I rent a car. I have no problems with it.

It is very heartening to see quite a few of you who can drive - I've been worried that my condition will stop me. I need to try and control my meltdowns when driving. The problem is when something unexpected occurs it throws me and now I have the fear of unexpected thigns occuring. I did somehow pass my dirving test but i have been too scared to drive since. I will book some more lessons and give it another go.

I voted "Not Yet" because I still don't drive but I hope to soon.
