Someone I know works with people with learning disabilities. When she makes a mistake or forgets something she says

"D'oh, I was so autistic/aspergers" and laughs like it's a joke. She associates the ordinary mistakes everyone makes with AS.
Is she trying to minimise her error, or carelessly disrespecting AS people? I thought she would be sensetive about what she says.

Wtf.

At the time, I didn't know enough about AS to mount a good rebuttal. So I just changed G.P.s.

Should receive Prof. discipline for that. :(

Doctors tend to not receive censure for just giving their opinions. The fact that I received a second opinion from a licensed mental-health professional with appropriate training reinforces the medical doctrine that G.P.s are merely front-line diagnosticians, and that only specialists can make a valid diagnosis. My current G.P. seems to actually care about what I tell her.

I'm glad. :D

My girlfriend used to volunteer to take care of disabled children and because of this she is very biased against the idea of me being in the autism spectrum, not to mention that me being female, she has certain social expectations of me that I seem unable to meet.

I think the worst thing I have heard her say about AS is that people with it need lots of help, not just socially and only seem articulate in writing and art because they have tons of support and editors, thus me being artistic and articulate means I am not autistic. >,< Yeah, pretty darn stupid.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard! Asperger's and the Macdonald triad (i.e method of determining murderers!) have absolutely nothing to do with each other! Your GP should have his freaking license revoked!!

^I was taught about that triad in one of my psychology lectures. It definitely has nothing to do with AS.

When I was seeing someone at uni about getting services, a guy that was there getting services on behalf of someone else noted that I remembered my student ID number and said that it must be because I am autistic. Which is weird - the majority of students remember their ID numbers. :?

MindBlind, I'm not sure how you hear all this stuff all the time, because I haven't heard a single one. I can only guess it's because you talk to NTs about being autistic a lot. If that's the case and their responses really bother you that much (and the language in your post seems to imply so), have you considered just not talking to them about it?

I never said that I heard it all the time. I said that I've encountered this before. Please don't make assumptions.

Erm, I don't actually talk to non autistics about being autistic all the time, unless it's on websites regarding autism (where I've heard a lot of this stuff). Again, stop assuming. Actually, a few of the things I've listed I've heard from people that were supposed to be involved in my education and therapy - people that were supposed to know what autism was.

Yeah, maybe I should have put it on a different section of the site because of the ranting nature of it.

Also, I'll talk about whatever I want with people.

PS: Another thing you should know about me - I'm an angry person. It's okay to be angry or, hell, even like being angry as long as it is in small doses and as long as you have a healthy outlet. I have a healthy outlet - it's called the internet.

Yes, so you are. I suspected as much (but didn't want to assume it ;)), so thank you for stating it explicitly. I will endeavour to keep that in mind and to not make the mistake of replying to your posts again.

One of the biggest things that makes me really angry is when people try to make people with autism out to be going to commit a crime, especially a harmless one due to their special interests and also not understanding how it would make their victim feel. It's as if they think we don't know right from wrong. Then when an aspie does commit a crime, people try and blame it on the condition and it makes me angry. What's even worse is if an aspie commits a murder or rape and they try and use their AS as a defense.

My dentist who is a very kind very old man said something very stupid when I told him about my diagnosis. He said "really? You don't look that disabled."

A girl who was a fellow Psychology student once said to me " I took abnormal psych and we read about Asperger's but I didn't know that they (people with said condition) could really go to university or anything". This girl was a VERY good student. too......she won the "book prize" at my school which is an award going to the full-time student who has the highest GPA in a given year of anyone in the university.

This is a lie. I met other people in real life with Asperger's syndrome, and they did go to university.

Yes.....I just got my degree.......my problem is getting out of university.............I'm still taking a random course with no idea what I'm going to do with it (not that I'm blaming that on AS).

I feel so stupid for having approached some psychiatrists before seeing a proper psychologist. They all turned me away with some anti-depressants telling me I was self-labeling myself.

These are some dumb things they said:
1) You can't have aspergers you are doing fine at school.
2) You can't have aspergers you talk just fine.
3) You can't have aspergers you make good eye contact.
4) If you know so much about AS you are probably just self-labeling yourself.
