I like hugs from friends and family (I have one friend in particular whose hugs are amazing and I steal them whenever I can) but if it's an acquaintance or stranger, I'm not comfortable with it, and I sort of just hug their shoulders stiffly, less of a tactile thing and more of a personal space thing.

I find them awkward physically, but they're still nice in a cognitive way, because I know that someone who is hugging me wants to communicate things like greeting, friendship, comfort or reassurance. Since I know those meanings, I don't mind. It doesn't feel natural to me, but then what non-verbal language does? I just translate it in my own mind to something I can understand, and the positive message is enough to make the awkwardness trivial.

The only time I hug people is when they ask or force me too. Some people ill respond willingly and others force it on me. When its within my will I stand there like a tree and put my arms somewhere behind them awkwardly. In other cases its a tree with arms at side.

Hugs don't make me feel comfortable, so I avoid them when possible. However, if a person I know asks for a hug, I will participate. Several of my family members have made comments about "teaching me to like hugs" by asking for them more often. I continue to explain that while I like them, hugs make me uncomfortable. I keep saying the words but I can't get them to take me seriously.

With close family members I am fine. I love hugging my children, but I have a limit as to how long the hug can be and I start to pull away if it goes on longer than I want. I'm often if not always, the first to pull away. With people I don't know I would feel really uncomfortable hugging. You know how some people are all kissy-kissy and huggy-huggy for social purposes, I hate that. If I meet someone (female) and I felt I click with them and have spent time talking I might feel comfortable giving a quick hug but not with a male unless I knew them very well (I am female).

Personally, I do not like hugs. If it's someone I know, I will put up with it, but I have a hard time with people simply deciding to come up and do it. I fail to see the point of hugs, really--but I know there's a lot of people that like hugs... so maybe it's just me. :)
