I had bracers and a retainer. I worse the bracers for maybe 4 years, and the retainer for two. I have one slightly crooked tooth, which is on the bottom row anyway. I really disliked bracers and retainers for many of the reasons stated in this thread, with some extra complaints regarding the retainers 
I also got my wisdom teeth pulled pretty early (age 14) because they would have grown in completely wrong and messed up all my teeth.
But after all that, I do have straight teeth. I like that.
