No wonder you're frustrated. The insurance issue... that stuff is expensive. Surgery, hormones, all of that. And they still think of it as "elective", as though it were just a fancier version of a tummy tuck or a nose job.

I don't really know much about this, but I wonder if maybe some trans people who have mental illnesses, have those mental illnesses precisely because of the stress involved with being transgender. Bipolar has a huge genetic component, of course, but environmental stuff can push you over the edge into actually expressing those genes... But then, autistic people are more vulnerable to stress, too, so you kind of got a double whammy.
