I would say "differences in neurological wiring"- a difference DUE to genetic/epigenitic inheritence.

Its not 'environmental' in the sense that it is the result of bad upbringing ( refrigerator moms, abuse, or the child seeing something nasty in the woodshed).

With some individuals it MIGHT be environmental in the sense of - chemicals in the environment. But that would have to be in the pre natal environment of the mothers pregnancy- since it manifest early in childhood.

So with some children it might be to some degree aquired by some chemical assault in the environment, in the main for most autism sufferers its inherited.

Probably different causes for different individuals.

Mine probably genetic, as I inherited two different sets of autistic traits from iMother and iFather.

From iFather, social autistic traits and obsessive autistic traits, while sensory autistic traits lacking in him.

From iMother, sensory autistic traits and obsessive autistic traits, while social autistic traits lacking in her.

I got all their autistic traits, which possibly integrated into moar moar moar autistic traits like communication and language delays as child and verry merry berry autistic cognition as adult.

When I was younger I was bullied in school, beaten so badly by my father that I went to school bleeding from the face, sexually threatened by a next door neighbor and otherwise treated like dirt. In essence, I was nothing more than that crawling slug people accidentally step on when they're walking down the street.

The abuse has led me to withdraw from the world. I shunned eye contact and didn't speak unless spoken to. I said the wrong things to people because I just didn't know how to carry on a meaningful conversation. I had no practice! Who'd practice with me?!

I came to the U.S. at 12 years old and my awkwardness came to the fore. Now, not only did I barely speak to people, I isolated out of fear of being bullied. I was bullied in the American schools and even by neighborhood toughs, so it just seemed I couldn't get away from it.

I've sometimes wondered if some of my autism traits were "beaten" into me or just a result of being autistic. I am extremely sensitive to loud sudden sounds and I do have a fascination with running water, but I don't know if autism explains that or are the soothing sounds fueled by my constant isolation from the world because of bullying.

The rocking back and forth I do could possibly be explained by autism, or it could be me having a permanent pacifying "recoil" from my history of abuse.

The intensity of my focus on my special interests (writing music, short stories and novellas) could either be explained by autism or the simple fact of being constantly friendless because of communication deficits.

Well, I don't know what causes autism. But there's one thing I know for sure: it's not psychological. It's neurological stuff.

Some of these options make no sense. You're born with Autism; so how would things like abuse cause it?
:?

I think it's genetics or something to do with the mother's hormones during pregnancy.

I selected "other."

I suspect that what is currently considered "autism" is actually a bunch of different yet similar conditions. I'd be surprised if there was one underlying cause for all the variation seen across the spectrum.

In my case, I think the 52 point gap between my visual and verbal IQ is a significant factor.
