Sounds like you're a bit too sensitive. Just my opinion, though.

They are just words. Nothing more than tools for communication. I call myself a ret*d whenever I do the slightest mistake. In fact, I consider myself socially ret*d.

yeah its possible, both due to the impact of ID and having suffered severe lifelong bullying from kids, teachers and adults in relation to the ID and autism.
those of us who have ID tend to be sensitive as we dont have the same mental and emotional IQs or abilities to deal with it.
one of the users here had acutely targeted mine during his campaign of grooming and bullying for a number of years, prior to that whilst at special college had also been followed around manchester for a long time with mum by a gang of teenagers and hit with a campaign of bricks and intelectual disability slurs, they knew am disabled because its visibly obvious in self to people-am actualy phobic of the town because of them despite it being original hometown.

mental retardation as a label also doesnt describe us-we have varying levels of mental capacity;having slow thinking is not the cause.
,its been removed for several years unofficialy and was oficialy removed this year in may, even the medication of mine; tegretol ret*d changed finaly name because of the connotations it has towards us,why shoud we used as a comparison for people to compare their idiot mates or stupid things to? what have we done other than be born with a disability that others cant understand without showing pity or bigotism?

some of us have grown up been treated as burdens on society because of our intelectual disability,we have spent our entire life being called intelectual disability slurs, being treated as sub human and useless as a result of the slur connotations, its always in comments of people here in autism cure topics, they want us cured because they think we need it,they havent got a clue what we want.
have even been told to kill self by a member here and a ex support staff because of it and because of their ignorance and bigotism towards it.
Did you report these people? On WP it would just be telling a mod to have the post deleted, but for the staff member... That's scary. What if that staff member had said that to somebody who was depressed? I don't know if they'd believe you, because often times people don't believe clients, but did you try, at least? You say ex-support staff so I presume you got yourself away from them, at least. People like that should not be working with disabled people, ever.

I find it sad that people aren't offended by this word and people are comparing it to being called an "idiot" or "stupid" and that "words are just words, they can't hurt you". This is absolutely sickening. Words are not just words. Words hurt people and any word to degrade a human should be thrown out of your vocabulary. Sure, I'm not perfect, I sometimes slip out the word b***h or stupid, but It's never ok. I try very hard to not let it slip. If words were just words then people wouldn't be offended by the N word and people wouldn't get in trouble for saying the N word. But some words are just off limits because it's degrading and extremely hurtful. And don't tell someone "sounds like you're being a bit too sensitive" either, if it hurts them, then it hurts them. Some people are sensitive and some arent, but if you hurt them, that pain is real and don't say it again.

Imbecile was a medical category of people with moderate to severe mental retardation, as well as a type of criminal. The term arises from the Latin word imbecillus, meaning weak, or weak-minded. It included people with an IQ of 26–50, between "moron" (IQ of 51–70) and "idiot" (IQ of 0–25).

If words can't hurt you then why are people committing suicide after cyber bullying?

I cannot express how thoroughly this does not surprise me about you.

 I can't express how thoroughly your reply doesn't surprise me either. I don't think we agree on a single thing.

Yeah, I think my ethical perspective makes agreement between us difficult.

That's (part of) what I wrote, and I stand by it 100 %.
I will now predict that it doesn't surprise you. I in turn am equally un-surprised about that.

Of course it doesn't surprise me. It also doesn't surprise me that you either did not understand KingdomOfRats' post or you simply interpreted in a manner that makes it easier for you to dismiss it as something it's not (that is, "political correctness").

I'm fed up with people who say that behaving like a sociopath is the best way to be, makes excuses for bullying, acts like bigotry has no relevance or meaning, and in general promotes and justifies antisocial behavior as perfectly fine. You're part of the problem that this thread was started to discuss.

That's horrible logic. Really, it's not even logic.

It's not a double standard - some words have negative connotations that apply primarily to specific groups of people. The problem is expecting that such people should be okay with having such words used no matter what those words represent because they don't offend you, and that's a very restricted perspective that betrays a complete lack of concern for the impact one's actions have on other people.

Skilpadde tends to approach these discussions from the point of view of the bully. Just saying.

Yeah, words are just words.

And people who use the term "ret*d" in a derogatory manner are just obnoxious c__ts.

Society is so much better when we dispense with manners, civility, and respect for other people for fear that we might infringe on someone's ability to "freely express" whatever septic thoughts flow through their itty-bitty brains.

What does it have to do with you? No one is offended that you don't find them offensive. The person you quoted said it was "sad". What creates the friction is the assumption that everyone else should think the same way you do, or that because they don't offend you there's no problem with using them.

This isn't rocket science.

Words Can Hurt (link to pdf)

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/how ... n-hurt-you

Words can hurt. That's why psychological and emotional abuse are real things that people experience. Being harassed verbally can easily be a traumatic experience. Having people using the words that are used to express hate about people like you against you will trigger the amygdala (as described in the second article), which creates stress, anxiety, fear, etc.

Words mean things. They're not powerless or meaningless. They represent ideas and actions. People in this thread who claim that words can't hurt you are essentially claiming that language has no meaning, which is either a self-serving lie or an expression of profound ignorance.

No one's going to stop you from using words. No one can stop you from using words. However, your freedom to use those words does not free you from the consequences of using those words. Being hateful is your choice. Being hateful and insisting that the targets of the hate you express shouldn't be bothered by it is at best selfish and ignorant.

I said words are just tool. She said that it is a sickening, sad thought. Therefore, she is offended because I am not offended.

Besides, I never said everyone should think the same way I do. That would be impossible, since every person is a different individual. That is not rocket science, either.

Also, I never said that I call other people "ret*d". I only said said that I say that I am ret*d whenever I do a stupid thing. To be honest, there are people I call ret*d, but only people I know and who would not mind it in first place.
