When I was a kid, psychiatrists called us schizophrenics (sad but true). That was my original diagnosis around 1962:

Quote:
000-x28 Schizophrenic reaction, childhood type
Here will be classified those schizophrenic reactions occurring before puberty. The clinical picture may differ from schizophrenic reactions occurring in other age periods because of the immaturity and plasticity of the patient at the time of onset of the reaction. Psychotic reactions in children, manifesting primarily autism, will be classified here. Special symptomatology may be added to the diagnosis as manifestations.

American Psychiatric Association (Washington, D.C.), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual: Mental Disorders (DSM-I). 1952. Page 28.

The word "autism," which has been in use for about 100 years, comes from the Greek word "autos," meaning "self."

The English translation is literally selfism or perhaps self centred

It is just my own subjective reaction.

If I said that I was artistic, I would be describing an activity. I said I was an artist, I would be describing me. Well, of course that assumes I am an artist. :hic:

I was trying to make an absurd joke. :)

I prefer Autist to Autistic (as a noun). "Autist" is, to me, more personal. "Autistic" sounds like someone did something to me.

Haha I like that idea It's funny.

More like something an artist did to someone else ;)
