I'm 25 and have literally never been to a barber/hairdresser! I actually do quite a good haircut! I'm one of nine brothers and a few of them often get me to cut their hair. I wouldn't attempt to do either of my sisters hair though. I am really only experienced with doing the one kind of haircut (shorter back and sides and a bit longer on the top). When I was young I always wore my hair long. Up until a point in high school my mum always cut it until I started and no one else but me has done it since.

I have tried and its turned out horribly usually i have my sister cut it, because she did that professionaly for a while so she knows what she's doing.... but now I am just growing it out.

if want to look like a pro at it,get a pair of electric clippers and do a 'number nought',its impossible to go wrong with it and am always being told by very surprised people how profreshnal it looks ;) apart from mum,she just thinks look like a stereotypical criminal when am not wearing the helmet and keeps saying it needs to be kept long, she gets the middle finger for that one every time though.

I dislike having my hair cut by someone else, though I'm not averse to having my hair / scalp touched.

Not being the most skilled barber in the world, I can only really do one 'style' and keep it reasonably neat - the skinhead. This, I'm told, makes me look like a cancer patient / nazi / hardened convict (delete as appropriate) but I like the low maintenance / zero insulation look.

My husband cuts his hair. He can't stand the sensory issues.

I used to cut his hair. It was passable, but I would die inside. Then I flat refused. He wasn't doing ADLs, and felt like I was enabling him.

So he got clippers and buzzed himself. It looks like a cross between military and mental patient.

He gets alot crap over how his hair looks. I say nothing. It's passable. Not worth the battle.

I am a woman and my hair is about waist length, I cut my hair once when mom was out of town taking care of my Pawpaw. I only have one mirror so I couldn't see what I was doing. Had my hair down scissors behind my back and went buy feel. Used my empty hand to feel that length and make sure each section felt even with the others. Of course it helps that my joints are made of rubber, most people probably couldn't do it. But other wise my Mom is the only person who's ever cut my hair.

I would never trust a stylist. I love my hair just as it is and have heard to many stories of ladies asking for a trim and coming out with a complicated layered bob that requires maintenance and products. No thanks. That and I don't like to be touched.

I won't allow anyone to cut my hair, unless they have an appropriately post-apocalypse hair style themselves. I can't respect anything less.

Mainly, I do my own haircuts. I've been experimenting with this for over two decades. My haircuts are usually exactly what I want.

I cut my hair mostly. My mum cuts my hair sometimes.
I always felt conscious and uneasy when my hair's being washed at the salon. And I hate looking in the mirror. I would grab a mag and read it to escape the glances of the barber.

How do other long haired people cut their hair and make sure it's even?

I'm always trying to cultivate a Mad Max style of barbaric post apocalypse mullets.

This requires a mix of short and long hair. To cut long hair so it's straight-

Hair ties and clips keep the hair you don't want cut out of the way.

Pinch and spread out thin a lock of hair between your pointy and mid finger (or use a comb) and guide the scissors along the edge of your finger / comb.

Two mirrors are essential for evaluating the haircut around the back. Or a phone cam.

You may need to tousle your hair every now and then to see how it falls.

Clippers are great for making short hair straight and even.

It's always better to cut too little than too much. You can always cut mistakes shorter.

Around the sides, I find a vertical cutting motion with scissors more effective than a horizontal motion for attaining a straight edge.

My hair is straight and fine.

My haircut is the shaggy type and long so there's no need of cutting it straight. And if it did go wrong then I'll just live with it. It grows fast anyway.

Thanks! That's from the band Radiohead.
They had a DVD entitled Meeting People Is Easy which I really think is not.

hmm.. I never thought about that... I'm sorry for not being more inclusive with this thread. Maybe youtube videos?

I didn't expect any responses to my original post tbh... i'm amazed that so many aspies are cutting their own hair like me.

Nothing like other Aspies to make you feel a little less lonely in this world.

I love all you guys/gals <3
