I used to do this a lot - and it frequently got me into trouble because I would say things without knowing the meaning and cause offense. And, as a child, when this happened, it would invite punishment.
These days I look idioms up on Urban Dictionary when I realize I'm using a term without knowing what it means.
That's funny because I tend to make up my own idioms on the spot. Maybe I can't call them idioms if they're not widespread but I use metaphors and similes in my speech quite often.
