yes, nt's do stim! If you look around you will notice your friends' mannerisms and for many of them this includes at least one type of stim.
what I think is the greatest difference is that I (we?) feel the stim triggers more often or intensely than nt's and therefore while their stims are subtle mine can be really like a jolt of energy.

[Autistic Stims originate from SENSORY HYPERSTIMULATION and a stim is a REPETITIVE BODY MOTION that diffuses anxiety - ROCKING, SWAYING, HAND FLAPPING, ETC.

If it is not physically soothing, it's not a true autistic stim.

I don't stim only when I am feeling hyperstimulated and need to diffuse anxiety, but also when I am thinking or distressed or excited. And I know it because they are all different stims, for instance, when I am anxious I move my fingers or hand, when I am distressed or tired I rub my face, when I am thinking I pace, when I am excited I I flap my hands, repeat sounds or words fast (like lalalalalala) etc

The difference is mainly in degree but there tend to also be qualitative differences. An autistic person might stim to a point where it severely impairs them in daily functioning. However, if someone twirled their hair all day everyday, refused to do anything else and/or it distracted them from doing anything productive ect. it could have clinical significance

Hm.. I don't think my stims interfere with my functioning. At most they help or make people think "this is weird".

It is mindless confusion over obvious things like this that convince me there are a great many misdiagnoses where HF/AS are concerned. If you truly suffered from autism, this would be a no-brainer.

care to elaborate? I am truly interested. What are the points that make you think there are many misdiagnosed people?

In other WP threads, people included links to this: [url=http://insideperspectives.wordpress.com/compulsions/stimming/][.

this is soooooo cool!! ! Thanks for posting! I wish people would include more classifications everywhere!

Happily my stims are mostly semi-odd or not that weird. yay!
my semi-odd stims according to classification:
-rubbing
-twisting fingers
-pacing
-talking to oneself

hmm I also have some odd stims. I avoid doing them when I am not at home but some are hard to control!
-smelling things (damn hard to control! If it is the right kind of paper or wood I WILL smell! this site has a description: "certain smells cause intense pleasure" YESSSSS)
-touching things (I can hardly control this one either. I even touch other people's stuff if they are not looking because it is IRRESISTIBLE. I have got into trouble for touching other people's stuff without permission before )
-toe walking (I only do this at home! But sometimes when I am excited I half-do it outside home too, like I get in my toes and then down, up and down. this people think is weird)
