It all depends on how it is said, too. As with everything. Most often people just use it as a friendly greeting, for sure!

Calling someone "darling" can be really derogative depending on context. Implying that you are a kid that needs help.

Like about a year and a half ago, I got to meet Olympic gold-medalist Ashton Eaton at a meet-n-greet autograph signing where I live. When he first saw me he said "sup dude!" even though he didn't say that to any of the other young guys ahead of me from what I saw, and I'm pretty sure he meant it as a slight compliment too. :)
