This is probably the same thing that can make you appreciate music in a different way. It's probably a good thing, that your senses are more sensitive, more open. You'll enjoy the finer, more subtle things in art and life in general. Less discos, more cello quartets. No?

Yes it's true for me. I feel like my brain is wired specifically for music. The same auditory issues that cause me problems in everyday life, were also what made me very good at music.

Lately I've been wondering if other people, I mean people who are not sensitive to sounds, really cannot hear music the same way I do?

I've been thinking about that too. Fascinating. I think that yes, people do not hear the same thing. I'm not sure if it's purely physiological. I mean in a test of hearing two people might get the same result, but the difference is at another level of the mind I think. Same thing with two people viewing a painting, or tasting wine etc. I think certain drugs can alter you senses in this regard and give perspective on it. I also feel hopeful that meditation and certain spiritual practices can open and enhance your senses, at least it seems like that is the case. Depression, similarly, is in my view a spiritual mechanism, and it affects your senses. I don't think depression damages anything though, it more closes your doors of perception, as a way to highlight certain areas of the mind that are neglected.

I hear everything, I mean everything! And everything annoys me! People who smack, snorting their runny noses, clicking with their pens, tapping with feet, loud breathing, snoring, etc etc. Aaaaaaah! Even thinking about it gets me annoyed! Do you relate?
I always sleep with earplugs, or else I won't get sleep at all, when I'm watching tv and there is noise outside, I close the window. My hubbie smacks with his mouth closed, also verrry annoying. How do you cope? Can you block it?

I close my parents bedroom door when they snore too loudly and my son's if my dad is sleeping in there with him. I also close mine too. That blocks it out. I also use ear plugs if I have to sleep in the same room. When I stayed at the lake house, I heard lot of snoring and I couldn't block it out with my door closed so I got some ear plugs and they worked like a charm. I wouldn't even notice people were up the next day. I plan on using them again this summer. When my ex snored, I blocked it out with ear plugs and loud music in my ears from headphones. When I lived in an apartment, fan blocked it out and so did my ear plugs because I would hear my husband snore in the next room. I would also close the window if I woke up to kids playing next door in their yard and that would be without any ear plugs.

Luckily snoring is the only issue I have from people. I can't imagine heavy breathing annoying me or chewing or lip smacking, or footsteps, etc. One thing I found it hard to cope with was loud TVs and loud music playing by my neighbors. I am so glad I got out of there. then I discovered our next door neighbors played their music so loud and then I heard they were deaf people and I thought "Oh no, I am going to have to deal with loud music again, oh well at least they aren't close to us and they are all the way over there, I will just close the window" but fortunately they have not played any loud music since we moved in and it's only the father there that is deaf, not his wife and grown children.

Ugh, don't get me started on bass. It bothers my mother too and she is NT.

Snoring is commonly annoying...
I went to an air-force festival here in Holland the other week. I was a festival of the Dutch royal air-force, with also stunts with small planes, demo-teams etc. Pretty cool, since I'm a sucker for f-16's and other jetfighters.
Because it was recommended that you used earplugs, I had them in my ear the whole day. What a relief! How wonderfull was my silence, on a festival with 180.000 people around me! I was in my own bubble and I loved it! Now I take my earplugs everythere. The other day I used them on a train, when someone next to me was eating a popsicle, very very loud! I used them on a bus, when I was there, there where 5 other people. 4 of them were on their cellphones talking, in 3 different languages! How annoying!!

I bought my machine 30 or more years ago in response to a ferocious dog that barked at all hours of the day and night. It still works

I have my own white noise in my own ears: tinnitus!

There are white noise machines specifically for tinnitus

Don't much care about little noises like that.
I don't like their talking though. I wish people would stop talking. I also wish they'd drop dead, but better to start small and work my way up.

Smells are worse.
I hate the smell of perfume of any sort. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. I hate most of the things people at work have for lunch... or breakfast (they might as well be eating boxes of raw sewage)... I hate other smells that I know better than to mention in public because I'd probably get banned.

It is only a matter of time until I have to invest in nose-plugs.

I've used noise generators to block out external sounds, and I find it can be quite relaxing.
