Tell it to Polish authorities. We are a nation of mourners. Guess how our Independence Day looks like! Nah, no fireworks. We visit graves again, just graves of "unknown dead soldiers", not family members. And TV is full of documentaries about wars, stating how many people died for our country.
Having fun is apparently not allowed.
Does Polen have carnival?
Officially we do. But I don't see much parties. It's more like we are allowed to have fun but noone really bothers. Except clubs in huge cities but they use any reason to throw a party anyway because it's money for them.
Our New Year Eve looks kinda like an carnival since people dress up and go to parties but New Year Eve is not within the carnival time, right? Other than that we have the Fat Thursday a few weeks before Easter but that's not really celebrated - we just eat a lot of donuts at that day and that's it.
The most fun holidays in Poland I know are:
Valentine day - same as other countries I quess.
The Śmingus-Dyngus/Lany Poniedzialek/Sprinkle Monday (Easter Monday) - it is not save to get out at that day or even open your room because people are allowed to attack each other using water pistols whenever they have a chance. Children have a lot fun outside, especially if the day is warm enough but its early spring so it is usually too cold outside to get really wet (10-15*C). I remember one Śmingus-Dyngus that was 25*C when I was a child, it was really fun!
The Day of Children (1st of June) - they set up some contests for children, some fun places have free access for everyone, the outside swimming pool officially opens for summer time, children get gifts from family members etc.
The Andrzejki (30th of November) - people met up to see their future using many methods of future predictions. Noone believes it anymore but it is fun thing to do with a group of friends.
Christmas - no need for explanation.
New Year Eve - dress up parties and fireworks.
Oh, and we also have something called Carol. It occurs between Christmas and 6th of January. Groups of children dressed up kinda Halloween like but with limited set of costumes - Death, Devil, King, Star and an cow-like animal - visit houses to sing carols and beg for money.
Later the real church priest visits house to bless it.
