Why do you get into fights with people?

Hm..., retared is someone who’s been tared again, isn’t it?

That would be "Retarred", as in "The feathers fell off, so we retarred the varmint". Maybe he meant "Retired"?

No, I mean tared in this sense:

Wiktionary wrote:
Verb

tare ‎(third-person singular simple present tares, present participle taring, simple past and past participle tared)

(chiefly business and law) To take into account the weight of the container, wrapping etc. in weighting merchandise.
(sciences) To set a zero value on an instrument (usually a balance) that discounts the starting point.

When I was a kid, I would hear other kids say it all the time if anyone even remotely said something dumb or strange. And this was back when it was still being used by doctors. I hated it and I still do now. Words like idiot and moron were also once medical terms for mentally challenged people, but because people used them as insults all the time they don't any more. When I was a little kid I thought "moron" was a bad word... well, it's not a swear word but it's not a nice word, that's for sure. Mainly to someone who doesn't deserve it.

So ... being called "Retared" means that you are either someone to be ignored (like the weight of a container) or that you have no inherent value.

What an insult!

I have, but it doesn't bother me at all. At the end of the day, they are gonna do what they are gonna do, and I'll do what I'm gonna do. I also used to get called ret*d by my older brother, but he has Bipolar, so he doesn't really have any higher ground..... :|

My teachers at school labelled me that way.

One of my teachers in primary school told my mum she thought I was stupid at a parents evening once. Needless to say my mum was less than impressed.

Yes, I have. I loathe that word with a passion. If I could remove one word from the English language I would definitely remove "ret*d(ed)".

I was last called "ret*d" in high school. I was frequently called "socially ret*d" by my mother's boyfriend.

Honestly, the word ret*d doesn't bother me that much. I'm sure that those who are intellectually disabled find it offensive, but it's really just become a generic term to mean something that doesn't make sense or appears to be stupid, pointless or ridiculous. As in: "Oh, that's so ret*d," or "Stop acting so ret*d about it."

Idiot, imbecile, and moron were all real medical terms to label those with intellectual disabilities, yet people use those words all the time and no one seems to care.

"ret*d", on the other hand, is usually used as an insult to indicate that someone is so stupid/weird that they seem to be intellectually disabled. Or it's used to insult the intellectually disabled. That word I don't like when used in that manner.

If I hear the word "ret*d," my reaction is similar to the "Back to the Future" kid when he is called "chicken."

I've only been called it in jest by some people I know. As far as I know, no one has called me a ret*d to try to hurt me. In general, I've lived a life pretty free from bullies, surprisingly.
