I didn't learn to drive until I was 21. My ex husband (boyfriend at the time) gave me a few lessons in parking lots, but overall I had to teach myself. I was scared too at first, especially after I moved back to Atlanta after college, but I got more and more used to it. Now I'm a driving fiend (my friends say I drive like a maniac, but I've never been in a wreak that was my fault ).

Just let him go at his own pace. He'll eventually get sick of not being mobile and take the initiative.

I hope that you are all correct and that someday he will take the initiative and want to drive.

Bless you all.

He doesn't NEED to drive. As for the fear part, try taking him to a go-kart track to start (I started learning drifting on my friend's go-kart when I was 9). Granted, he will probably never learn something as technical and dangerous as drifting, but it might help. And if he's not cut out to drive, then so be it. I'd rather not have people afraid to drive be on the road.

I hate driving. Always have. (I'm thankful I have a car and CAN drive, but I hate it.)

I hate the risk you take every time you drive of hurting someone.
I hate the smell of gas/other cars.
I *HATE* all the insane drivers on the road who drive like idiots and get furious because you're not accommodating them breaking the law.
I *HATE* how expensive cars are (and insurance, etc.)
I HATE how in most locations you HAVE to have a car to get anywhere.
I HATE the damage cars do to health and the environment.
I *HATE* parallel parking. I avoid it at all costs.

I would also HATE public transportation if any were really available around here.

Ah, so you are also familiar with the scum known as the average Illinois driver.

I love your avatar, Spot17.

Also, I like to drive.

Gas is too expensive now. Just 3 years ago, gas was cheap enough to pick a direction and go.

I don't think so. I mean a slight screw up with a shopping cart might bump someone, but not cripple them for life (well...not 99.9% of the time). There's nothing else I do on a (near) daily basis that caries with it that much risk. I don't really think about it that much, but I do dislike that aspect.

Driving can be all of the above; but it gives one independence and freedom. Is that the part of it that aspies are afraid of? That they have to haul their own load?

How does one get around, buy groceries, clothes, etc., without a car, unless you live in a pretty large city, which not every aspie does.

It's a situation that can't be avoided and driving is part of the independence process.

I forgot to mention in my other post about how bad I am at remembering directions. Yes, I love to drive, but Mapquest is my best friend. Well, I should give more credit to my husband for helping me with directions. Thank God for cellphones! I know we're not supposed to use them while driving, because it might cause an accident. In my case, though, my cellphone prevents an accident. Whenever I have that moment of panic where I'm unsure of which exit to take, I call my husband to confirm. It would probably be comical, if I ever decided to leave him:

Me: I'm through with this relationship! You'll never see or hear from me again! (Slam the door)

Five minutes later...

Me: Uh, would you mind telling me which exit to take out of town?

I haven't driven since february, and though I sometimes miss it (at first, I REALLY missed it), I do ok. I work at home now, can walk to the store/shopping center for just about anything I need, and the family doc is within walking distance. I can even get to three different restaurants on foot, the pharmacy, the electronic store, computer store, gift store, etc.

I can't believe how much I'm saving on gas alone, not to mention saving on the environment.

Once I get my car sold, I'll also save on insurance, car payment, and garage fee. :)

Sometimes it's a pain finding rides if needed, but luckily it doesn't come up too often. A couple times I took a taxi if need be, which can be expensive, but I've still come out financially ahead with savings in gas.

I love driving, I took a few lessons form my dad when I was 17 or 18, took one professional lesson and was uncomfortable with the instructor so never went back. I spontaneiously spent $2500 on a 125cc Suzuki bike, never had a lesson on a bike before but hopped on it and started driving. Had about 3 or 4 minor crashes where I came off the bike at speeds of 30-50mph.

My reactions seem to be slow or something, I see the accident coming but it takes me too long to react to it for some reason. Anywhoo, I would never have taken the initative to continue the car driving lessons if my sister hadn't of booked the first part of my test for the 20th of this month (3 years after I could have taken the test).

But back to the topic, I love driving, especially to the seaside.

Once he gets his written permit, I will be able to get a driving school to show him how to drive, by a professional.

I hope that works to make him more at ease about driving.

I'm sure he'll develop confidence with more experience. I was very nervous for a long time but no probs now! :)
