Sounds like 2012 was a year of unfortunate and somewhat traumatising events for both of us, and I am very glad that we both survived! I think it is a good plan to hope for the best while allowing for the possibility of some "worst case" situations as we get older, especially for people who live some distance from others and from back up services.

One of the reasons I kept my landline on, even though I have had mobile phones for ages, is that in a medical emergency I always know where the landline actually is, so if need be can hopefully stagger to it, whereas my mobile has a habit of disappearing on me, and turning up later in all sorts of mysterious places such as under the bedclothes or under the passenger seat in my car.. I swear that mobile phone has invisible legs and hides on purpose just to torment me

it has been my experience that digital devices can diabolically read our minds and in an inverse response, misbehave right when we need them to be on their best digital behavior.

...There was a really lengthy New York Times Sunday newspaper story a few months ago about someone who died this way (whether he was " one of us " or not I do not know - Maybe so , most likely?? undiagnosed and nonsuspecting) ~ tho' not a total recluse , he died , and few heard til' later , and he left a bit of an estate - with no direct friends.family around , it landed in some distant , relatives of one-time mild friends'?? , hands .
I thimk he may have lived in Queens , if that helps anyone in searching for the story .
I do live in this " supervised housing " situation now , I guess I'd be found relatively soon-ish :| .
When I've been fully homeless , well...........

If I croak, I wouldn't be noticed for about a week. And I live in Queens.

The bit that surprises me the most, is that her TV was still on. Surely it would've timed out and gone on standby. If it was around before standby, then I'm amazed it didn't overheat or fail after 3 years of being constantly on. Especially with static build up and the risk of fire.

Another angle; I thought most of the tube TVs from around that era stay off after a power interruption. At least where I live, a handful of power outages can be counted on every year. 3 years without loss of power would be unthinkable here.

Sorry for derailing. I'll continue to hope for ice cream.

...Um...uh --- you're married ? And the Missus ?
You two like Jiggs and Maggie (or , separating to prevent that) Endora and whatever her permanently estranged husband was ?

If I start wandering around as a ghost, lemme scare the pants off people for about a week, and then give Dean and Sam Winchester a call please. They'll get me sorted.

Is this something we're actually supposed to care about? Wouldn't we be dead and gone so it wouldn't really matter? I'd be more concerned about falling down and getting injured and nobody knowing about it. That sounds a lot scarier to me.

Still not as scary, if you ask me, as the possibility that the only ones to notice it are those interested in looting your body, and, perhaps, having some fun tormenting you in horrible ways before letting you die. Or just being found and eaten slowly and gruesomely by some wild predator.

Whether it's 10 seconds or 10 years, I'm almost certain I won't care.

I'd rather walk down to Dairy Queen and buy myself a large chocolate dipped soft serve ice cream cone.

I could be dead for anywhere from one to 12 months, before anyone would notice. All my bills are paid automatically. If I died today, it could be next August when they do my housing inspection, before anyone would find me. Unless maybe they need to redetermine my housing eligibility, probably in January. And for that I don't know how my apartment manager would respond, if I didn't respond to her request to come and fill out the paperwork. It would probably be a while after that, before they would decide to enter my apartment to look for me. So yeah, it would probably be months before anyone would find me.
