If one goes to see his/her GP in hope to be referred to a specialist in the area of AS in pursuit of a diagnosis, in the first instance the GP probably would not have heard of the condition. If they have and or are familiar with, because there is a lack of funding on the NHS they will not be inclined to assist by making a referral. In addition coupled with the fact that in London moreover there are few specialist psychologists around who work directly for the NHS, it will thus be very difficult. In order that one is either diagnosed and or treated, the NHS would have to pay for someone who would be working in a private capacity. You would go private but it would cost some £50 per hour. Every psychologist works in different ways depending on what you want. So they would cater for your needs by working at a plan. That said, even trying to access a private psychologist specialist is difficult because 1) there are few of them and 2) they are busy. Also worth considering, even if one obtained a diagnosis ‘privately’ this may not be recognised by your GP practice, thus may not be included on your medical records which is not very helpful in a number of ways. If one pushed the GP to help because help is really needed for whatever reason, frustration can appear, and the GP will not like your persistence, he/she may be inclined to refer you to a psychiatrist who even though maybe able to diagnoses AS and other connected disorders, - depending on your expertise that’s is as not all are all that good – may not be in a position to offer treatment. But they may then refer to an appreciate specialist, save for the fact as already stated that there is the lack of funding issue and lack of specialists whether NHS or private. If one needs to use their AS or treatment history in a Court, for whatever example, one will need a Forensic Psychologist because they can be good expert witnesses, unlike most other normal psychologists even some of those that work in the Autism area. If one was rich, he/she could pay private for all including an Expert witness and force such report to be recognised by your GP practice and included in your medical records. Each of our circumstances are different for this reason one has to build his/her own plan of action even if such professionals as GP’s (NHS) (Local Authority), Social Services and the like are not inclined to assist. One can consider suing an authority if you can prove that they break a duty of care, they are negligent because they do owe a duty of care, and regardless of the lack of fund issue they may or may not advertise. After all living with AS means that you are vulnerable so should be regarded as such. But the likes of social services will be inclined to disagree. I would advise to anyone who cannot afford don’t let such Authorities push, and mess you around, give them a hard time and consider Litigation. After all if one lives with AS, he/she is likely to be SUPER HUMAN in which instance inferior humans find it difficult to submit to the presence and demands of, especially the educated humans in authority, who may think that they are super human, but their just wonna bees ! Hope this helps.

Watched the film Scanners yesterday on BBC1 TV, was great fun.

would people in london be one of the most likeliest to get help without needing to go private? london and areas around it has the most autism specialists,am know that in manchester,it is near to impossible for adults to get asessment here [am was originally diagnosed as teenager with the wrong ASD after being sent to a mental health pysch. gp said there was no one else available, and no one who worked with autism],it seems that private is often the only way to go,am often wonder if english lulu [from manchester] from the AFF forum ever got an asessment as she was treated nastily by gp,gps should not say an adult is no way aspergic or autistic and refuse to refer them to someone who knows what they are talking about, they are not trained in the spectrum beyond knowing what 'ASD' means and cannot refuse a referal if it is needed.

if am remembering right, the national autistic society gives out names of private pyschs.

Ignorance exists concerning all subjects and issues by those who can be forgiven not to be aware and include those who should know and or is within ones capacity to research in order to discover.

I like your posting titles by the way, since I read some. They appear quite energetic and promote exiting response. You have so many and coupled with the enormity of this site, I feel completely overwhelmed because I find such individual input fascinating. Such content provides for me inspiration and great source of research of which I can return to. Albeit I may never catch up with the increased and continued postings. It is quite amazing. Thank you for your valid input.

Kind Regards. Stephen.

I have been posting a great deal recently because of the school holidays! I'll be almost invisible during school. Do I really have that many posts? Wow :). You're a rather nice person.

Even the psychiatrist who referred me, working for the health trust no less, admitted he had no idea about the condition. But luckily he actively asked for info and test/questionare results.

I'm from America. If you'd have thought of this three months ago, when I was vacationing in London... darn it! Oh well, my parents probably wouldn't let me go drinking in a London pub with strangers anyway.
