Though I was a professional trombonist beginning my freshman year of high school, I slowly left the instrument as I played keyboards professionally instead. After not having played the trombone for eight years, I had decided to play trombone in a local orchestra that my son had recently joined. After practicing up for a few weeks a few minutes a day, I didn't feel quite up to par. But upon making it through an orchestra practice for a two hour rehearsal, I felt pretty good about myself. A couple days later I noticed a blind spot in my left eye's vision. I went to my eye doctor who did a retinal scan and saw no irregularities. However, he thinks I have a small tear or hole in my left retina. Did playing trombone cause this as I was not used to it (playing wind instruments does put nearly 10% extra pressure within the eye)? I don't know. But I do know from what I have read that it is not a good idea to play a wind instrument if one has a retinal tear. It isn't certain if I have a tear or not, but I do have a small blind spot in my left eye.
