Apparently Hartnett did make quite a study of aspies before filming, and for the most part appears to have mimicked some of the more obvious (stereotypical?) activities, symptoms, etc. Its also an interesting study of how two Aspies in a relationship can interact, at least for someone who is AS and has an AS partner like I do.
The very nature of film calls for a degree of exaggeration in the first place, and sometimes AS aspects are so subtle they can easily be missed (which sort of explains the number of recent adult diagnosis of a LIFELONG disorder.) Due to the vrey variable nature of the spectrum, its probably all but impossible to include everyones "favourite" parts of AS, and frankly if they did, the character would probably be almsot unable to function. The film itself isnt all that exciting, but its a damn sight more accurate for an NT than Rainman is. Sadly, it also reflects the media idea that "mentals" can only be a) soppy romantics b) comedic relief c) shockingly abused or d) maniacal serial killers or supervillains. (By preference I would most like to be D.) It would make a nice change to have an AS protagonist who saves the day and gets the girl etc etc. (Im not counting "Nerd" films here.)
Best line for me? "You two both have aspergers so you share a lifestyle and viewpoint, whereas i just irritate the s**t out of everyone. " (Probably not an exact quote as its been a while since i saw it. )
