No I don't have issues with public restrooms. I have always had issues with none stalls and issues that don't have doors to the toilets and issues with changing in front of people because I was self conscious about myself but that is normal for adolescence when they are going through puberty.

I hate it when people keep trying to make up aspie traits. they make a list of the "symptoms" and I hope people will be smart enough to not self diagnose based on what they read in a blog about "symptoms." Instead I hope they will be smart enough to actually read about the disorder online and maybe read books about it than blogs or forums because it's not all accurate. Even NTs have related to aspies and related to what they have read about it or what an aspie tells them about their problem. It's just not enough information so the bathroom thing can be related to sensory issues and smell but the bathroom issue itself isn't an ASD thing.

I know what you mean. I read so many lists of symptoms online that I feel like the whole human race could relate to. The most reliable things to read are probably the diagnostic criteria and articles/lists from reliable websites. I have always been pretty modest, though. It isn't like this is a new thing for me; I've always really struggled with this. That doesn't necessarily imply ASD, though- it could be just a normal person thing. I have seen some pretty ridiculous traits online, though, so I know what you are talking about :D .

...Just don't tell the Texas State Legislature  :P 8) ! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !

quote="StampySquiddyFan"]On Samantha Craft's checklist for autism spectrum disorder in girls, it says that people with autism may be uncomfortable in public locker rooms, bathrooms, and/or dressing rooms. What do you guys think of this trait? Do you think that it could possibly be a trait of ASD, or is it just a normal person thing? I'm just asking because I'm curious as to whether this could maybe be something that I could get supports in place for or just explain myself better to people around me when I say I can't use a locker room (not to use ASD as a crutch, just to not feel as weird and bad myself). I couldn't use a bathroom in public until I was around 6-8 at school. I rarely use public bathrooms now as well. Like I said, I'm just wondering as to whether anyone else has a problem with this, and if so, do you think it's really related to ASD?

Don't have any problems with public restrooms. I will also use these portable toilets on festivals which are really gross if I have to...
I also don't have any problems with public locker rooms...I don't even have problems bathing naked (I think it's not allowed in the US or something? It's allowed here in Europe in many places, however).

Asides from that, it sounds pretty normal to me that a 13-years old girl will feel a bit uncomfortable with undressing before other people. Not something special and not something to worry about too much.

Edit: No, I'm not modest. I know where I have to wear clothes and where I don't. Sometimes it's annoying to put clothes on when I could stay in my bikini after swimming. I just know I have to.

True, but it is more than "a bit uncomfortable." I can't change in front of other people or in a locker room, and it really interferes with my life. It's not really a new thing with me either- I have always had so much trouble in bathrooms and locker rooms. I'm not worried about it, I'm just asking if anyone else has this problem and has any tips on how to get around it :D .

I hope your school understands that, and doesn't require you to dress in front of other people.

Well, I wouldn't say they understand, but I just go in the bathroom lol (even though we're not supposed to). It's still not fun, but at least I found a way to not have to change in the locker room :D .

That's smart...sometimes, you do have to do these sorts of things.

Thanks! Yup, sometimes it's better to just do what you need to instead of always following stupid rules lol :D .

Of course. I normally follow rules to a tee. The only time I would break them is when I "need" to (as long as it's not harmful) :D .

It's just an environment that autistic people aren't well suited to. It's not a trait. It's' related to a trait but not a trait itself.

That makes more sense. Thanks for answering Pieplup! :D

I suppose this issue could be related to Asperger's syndrome, but public washrooms have always been a serious problem for me too.

I hardly ever use public washrooms, and the only time I ever use them are when I am nowhere near my house, and I absolutely have to use the bathroom & can no-longer wait any longer. Even when I use them, I hate the noises & the smells of public washrooms.

One of my problems is that I am extremely private, modest, and self-conscious. Public washrooms have a serious lack of privacy, and I do not want any one to see or hear what I am doing in there, which really worries me. I am only comfortable using my own bathroom & when I am all alone. Sometimes, I will use the bathroom at my Dad's house or the staff restroom at my job, but it is still difficult for me. In those cases, I will turn on the water in the sink all the way up to mute the sounds of me using the bathroom. When I am at work, the staff bathroom is right next to where I work, and I can still hear peoples' bodily functions, which grosses me out; I complained to my boss about this problem, but nothing was ever done about it.

Another problem is changing my clothes. In high school, I had to wear gym class uniforms supplied by the school, and I was forced to change in the boys' bathroom. I would only change my clothes in the toilet stall instead of the bench in front of my classmates. I also never relieved myself even once during the four years I was a student at that school; I would simply wait until I got home to use the bathroom.

Swimming & going to the beach is another problem I have. I have not gone swimming since I was 13 years old, and I hate bathing suits. I am just very self-conscious, and I am uncomfortable with exposing myself & people seeing my body.

I think other people have similar issues, but since I have Asperger's syndrome, it could be part of my problem with public restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, and bathing suits.

Same here. I've concluded that it's probably a mix of sensory issues and self-consciousness for me. The only weird thing is that I'm not self-conscious about anything else :? .
