I've heard that Down Syndrome babies are aborted sometimes.

I find that to be wrong---especially since Down Syndrome people usually are happy and sociable people, and are able to be productive, especially if they are nurtured when young.

Exactly- I hate that. They may suffer from physical health problems, but they are happy to be alive. I wish there was a way to remove the heart defects and health issues without removing the amazing people they are. Same with Williams, Angelmans, and Fragile X Syndrome. I love the people with the conditions because they are so awesome, but I hate how they suffer. They don't deserve that, in my opinion.

People with Down syndrome live about half the avgerage life of an unimpaired person, can't have kids, suffer numerous physical health problems, and always suffer mental impairment.

But you don't see them complaining about it, do you? I hate how they live a shorter life span due to health issues, but it's a lot longer lifespan than if they were aborted, in my opinion.

You go, girl! 8)

I guess we see it differently. I don't see any problem with an abortion. I view it as no loss because they never gained sentience. I would not care if I had been aborted because I never would have been able to care.

I'm sorry you feel that way about yourself being aborted. We have different opinions, and that's okay.

I more mean if I never existed then I would never have been able to care.

Yeah, I know. But you would have died- and felt yourself die.

We discussed the topic below of this post in another thread in another section but since we are mostly repeating that thread anyway I will repeat the points.

A cure be it abortion, gene editing, intercepting autism in infancy by stopping the brain from wiring itself autistic via ABA therapies or some combination of the above on a voluntary basis sounds good in theory. IMHO an emergence of an optional cure will have very bad real world implications for anybody who chooses to remain autistic or any parent who chose to let their kids be autistic.

An autistic minor will not have a choice, that will be the parent's decision.

I know that a lot of us do not view autism a traditional disease we were "born this way" etc. If gene editing really does what they say it is going to do and a lot of truly horrible traditional diseases are gotten rid of, or the symptoms eased considerably these technologies will be viewed as we view penicillin now as a great leap forward. The fact that autism is not a traditional disease will not matter to most people.

A parent or individual who chooses not to take or give the cure will be viewed as morally reprehensible. The attitude will be there is something really wrong with a person who chooses not to get rid of a horrible disease. Who is going to want to employ a person who chooses to be disabled? Why should insurance companies pay for such people? Why should any money or effort be given for any supports, benefits or accommodations for such people? The attitude will be these as*holes think they are gifted the let them figure it out.

In a voluntary cure era, there will be some people that choose not to take the cure or "treatments" or give them to their children so there will be some autistics and an autism rights movement as those choosing autism would believe in Neurodiversity. The "remain" Autistics would be a lot smaller in numbers and more powerless than now. As the number of autistics grow smaller and more powerless the financial and peer pressures to "leave" will grow stronger meaning even fewer autistics with no chance to change the narrative. So Autistics probably will not be eliminated entirely but reduced to a tiny morbid curiosity at best.
