Since when is getting on SSI something to celebrate over?

If you don't know, then you haven't got to that point in your life and I hope you never do.

There is a difference between being grateful and relieved, and CELEBRATION!

Steve

Yeah, I don't really mean it in a celebration, but if you've ever been through the process, it's not easy and no guarentees it's even going to happen. Let's say it's relief and grateful and a little cause for, sometimes a long haul to get it, some joy. In my case it wasn't. Amazing what the VA can pull off in short order, not always, but I guess my case was somewhat convincing. Yeah it was pretty plain, but it still took me to figure it out, and some 35 years to see it. They don't come a a knocking on your door with a follow up, ask you how your feeling.

Have fun trying to live on $623 a month.

Sometimes it's more of a curse than a blessing :(

I apologize if I seem overly harsh, but the democrats came up with "the new deal". The idea was good, but they didn't collect enough. MAYBE that was part of their plan, because people retired for decades seeing it as a BARGAIN, and they will vote for decades more and spread propaganda. Then they raised it more, but the new people pay for the old. That ALONE is a bad plan! Then they had it pay for the infirmed, etc.... NOW they are talking about supporting the PLANET! The US is NOT the largest country, and is not the richest, and, after the plans now are realized, it will be the POOREST by ANY MEASURE! I have to pay into a pension plan that even THEY laugh at! Clinton even said it wasn't a trust fund even though his OWN BUDGET downloaded from the WHITEHOUSE calls it that. They can never privatize it, because trust fund laws would immediately require the trustee to be THROWN IN JAIL for FRAUD and malfeasance! Who would accept that? Can you just IMAGINE????? Here's $1. and you will be paid another .10 a month, and you will have to pay them and perhaps 20 others over $400 every month the moment they are approved. If you fail, you will be THROWN IN JAIL! What would YOU do?

I saw a postal mail carrier that claims to be infirmed, and the government pays him for NOTHING! His ONLY job was as a postal carrier, and he worked less than 2 years. So is he infirmed? I DOUBT IT! He travels ALL over going to star trek conventions, carrying a large HEAVY back pack! What of the kid that is always drugged up while his single father lives off the SSI drinking beer all day? What of the mother that got an education loan and used it to travel to california, and smoked cigarettes and talked all day? I could go on ALL DAY talking about only people I have PERSONALLY known!

When I heard about AS I swear I could have jumped up and down screaming YIPPEE, if I were open to doing such things. I saw posts here that seemed to confirm SO MUCH. I figured everyone was like me and went on to work hard, and probably be very successful, etc.... It saddens me to see so many seeing SSI as some free money source that is to be exploited, etc.... You should at least TRY to do well in your jobs, etc...

Steve

SteveK, I am not on SSI for AS...I am on it for epilepsy. When I applied I was completely unable to keep a hairdresser appointment, let alone a job.

What the...?

If I were this happy it would be because I'd accomplished something, an admission to grad school, a new job, anything. Do you have any idea how sad it is that you're overjoyed to be admitted to the dole? Congratulations on becoming dead weight. Go ahead, sit on your ass playing video games, collecting a check each month from taxes that those of us who are doing something with our lives pay into the system.

Yes. An IQ of 86 falls within the normal range of 85 - 115.

edit: Richard, I must tell you that I have gone, in reading this thread, from feeling happy for you (I'm currently going through the process of helping my autistic son get ssi) to being very upset at your very bad attitude. Your wanting to call your relatives and celebrate "free ca$h" is supporting the viewpoint of those who criticize you quite strongly.

As an educator, I would have to say that a person with an 86 IQ should, barring other issues like severe epilepsy, be employable. The attitude you are now expressing makes me feel that your efforts have all been behind getting ssi. Perhaps you should have worked as hard to find a job you could do. But...oh wait...that wouldn't be "free ca$h." I agree with those who have said that this is bad news for you.

On the other hand, Steve K, you really need to move beyond your ideological view of social welfare. You cannot view the benefits received by many p[eople who actually need them to live or to succeed in the light of a few people you know who are abusing the system. You need to make a better circle of friends.

You are a parasite. People like you make me physically ill. And the cash is not free. It comes at the cost of your self respect. What woman will want you now, rick?

What the hell? Why can't rick be a dishwasher? Or work at mcdonalds? Even the mentally ret*d can do these jobs with minimal training.

I NEVER said just use by US citizens wasn't OK. Unfortunately, that is apparantly a MINORITY of those involved.

BTW some people today act like they have IQs below 40! Just yesterday I went to a donut shop and quickly wondered if the guy could read the names of donuts off of the rack, and if he had trouble counting to 4! If ONLY the people acted like the had an IQ of 86! a 30 year old with an 86 IQ is like a 25 year old with a 100+ IQ!

Immortal,

Yeah, epilepsy can be BAD and, if you have a minor episode, you almost don't dare tell anyone. If the wrong person hears, you could even lose your drivers license, etc... Employers may be reluctant to hire, etc... I certainly wasn't referring to YOU either.

The IQ age-dependent formula doesn't apply for adults.
