Adventures in autism. Yeah one of the hardships of autism is people like that lady. Autistic meltdowns often have to due with some sensory overload over something no one else can detect. This is a good little chart about meltdowns.

it was a meltdown he had nothing to gain it came out of nowhere things where going well and it was like a bomb went off it was honestly scary even his dad being there did not help but when we move from that row he calmed down it still is so weird it is like a switch you turn on and off

Unfortunately in meltdown phase the senses go haywire and you can't really hear or see anyone because the mind is spinning out of control. Sometimes I can be talked down. But in a situation like that it's just total mental chaos.

I only lived here a month so it is kinda of hard to figure out sometimes

Autism is hard to figure out even for those who have it. But I think you have a knack for it.

there had to have been something down that aisle he was nervous about. As you probably are finding out, kids on the spectrum can be very stubborn. If he doesn't want to go down there, he's not going. Not without working on flexibility.

My son is really into numbers. He won't go down aisle 3 or aisle 9. So I make him a deal. If he goes down aisle three, he can pick the next aisle, for example.

Shops can easily been sensory overload, sounds, smells, bright lights and lots of people. I try to limit the amount of time shopping and avoid the busy times too. Maybe try some light shaded sunglasses or a hat with a peak if he will wear either of them.

In my toddler years, I was pretty good at throwing things down off store shelves, and emptying them.

I'm pretty insistent about always wearing a jacket, hoodie or vest so I can have pockets. I'm much more comfortable walking around with my hands in my pockets and hate it when I can't.

:) you really seem to have a knack for understanding autism.

I don't know about understanding Autism we went to my grand pa's house today and my stepbrother went I went to help Grand pa bale hay I keep saying he would meltdown because the tractors are so loud even in the cab but my little stepbrother loved it he did throw a fit when we had to leave and it was a fit but I just knew he would hate the noise from the tractors and the closeness in the cab ever since we got home he has been drawing pictures of the tractors and round bails of hay guess my point I thought I was starting to understand better and he did everything oppised of what I thought LOL

Many of us are triggered by specific types of sounds, not by all sounds. There are sounds that I actually love and I can be fine with them even if they are loud. There are other sounds that I am very sensitive to and they will trigger me to have a meltdown even if they are super soft and other people can barely hear them. I am frequency sensitive meaning that I am triggered by certain frequencies even if they are very very soft. I am also sensitive to broken sounds like a bass beat on a stereo. I am also sensitive to some lower frequency sounds but might not be as sensitive to higher frequency sounds. Like I can be ok with a smoke alarm. That does not bother me even if it is loud where as a bass beat on a stereo will make me have a meltdown even if others can barely hear it. So many times it depends on the type of sound that someone's particular brain either over processes or cannot process at all. Each person's brain has a different way of processing sensory input so that is why we can all be very different in the things we are sensitive to. So your brother might not be sensitive to the loud tractors because they are a frequency that his brain can process but something else that is loud might be at a very different frequency and his brain can't process that particular frequency. And they might be close enough that you don't notice the difference but his brain is sensitive enough that it notices the difference.

I think you may be right that he may have been triggered by a smell. When I am at the store and I go down the laundry/soap isle especially, the smell is so overwhelming sometimes that I can't tolerate it. If he was close to the soap isle or the laundry isle, the smells could have been too much for him. There are also some food isles that I can't tolerate also because of the smells.

that's the row we were on and a box was broke on the floor
Makes sense. My guess is that the smell completely overwhelmed him and his it was just too much sensory for his brain to handle. It might have visually overstimulated him as well.
